Hey I hope this works I just wanted to start a discussion thread since there isn’t one that I know of and the internet is eerily silent about promys right now…I’m about to turn in my application (Ya it’s late I’m doomed XD) what did people think of the problems, how did you do, how long were your proofs, etc.?
I handed in mine around mid march, got 8.5 outta 10. what did you get?
I got ~ 8/10, I started 1 and 9, I generalized both but had no clue where to start on 1 and I’m still not sure what 9 was asking. Was like 10 pages in all, typed but no skill with latex
It’s only been three days since I sent it and I am already extremely nervous (btw I’m applying to PROMYS Europe). I solved 10/10 (36 pages) and I’m pretty confident that the results were fine, but I just can’t help being nervous. I want to get chosen so badly… My solutions were so long because for problem 5 I came up for two solutions, one of which was very long. I included both solutions, but they were different results, so I had to prove that they were actually the same, what took quite a lot of space . I did it using LaTex.
Any thoughts? Do you think I will get in?
PD: please, post how many you guys have solved so I can get an idea of how other people did.
Wow 36 pages that’s crazy!
What do you think is the minimum completed problems that can give you a seat?
Most of you above seems to be doing pretty good with >8 probs done; am currently at 5 completed - 2 in progress and slowly losing confidence in getting a seat.
Does applying early give an advantage? I thought they didn’t do rolling admissions (ofc I could be sorely mistaken)?
Just submitted, got 10/10 with 18 pages!
Applied an hour and 14 minutes before the deadline. Lmao. Solved all of them w 25pages
Does anyone know how the final decisions are going to be like? will it just be accepted and rejected, or is there also a waitlist?
Man, after looking at your comments, I am seriously losing hope. I solved 8/10 (34 pages). I’m from India so I dont really think this will be enough
well, 36 pages for 8 problems is a lot. so if u have good proofs and included some generalisations, you still have a great chance!
also i am kinda curious. are there a lot of people in India applying?
Well, none of my friends applied. And most of the math fanatics (no pun intended;) ) I know have not applied. The bulk of the Indian applications comes from metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi and I’m from a lesser known town. I applied for the Mehta fellowship.
Thanks for that motivation, man! I definitely needed some of that. I did include a lot of proofs. I didn’t solve #3 and #9 because I started solving 5 days prior to the deadline. Pretty careless on my part. Hey, could you tell me how you solved #3 and #9???
Mathfanatic - there’s a waitlist and from what I hear a lot of people get in off it. And for future reference can people say if they typed or handwrote their proofs when saying how many pages they wrote?
I heard about Promys way too late and didn’t have time to LaTEX, so I typed everything in Word and only did 9/10 (not sure if right) and submitted like an hour before the deadline. I’m from Canada so do i have a disadvantage?
Also, what’s the acceptance rate?
They don’t state the acceptance rate, they accept around 100 people, I’d say it’s below 50% but that’s just conjecture (neeeeerdy pun)
wait they accept 100 people? doesn’t that include the returning students?
So, do any of you guys know when they are gonna release the results???
It says on their website that the results will be emailed in the first week of May. and i don’t think they hand out decisions prior to that. in the past few years, the reults usually come out on May 4th.
