Pronoun shift question.

I was reading through Kaplan prep book.

If someone loses his way in the airport, they can ask any employee for directions.

It says the subject is someone, and they is wrong. So what should the word be instead of they?

I believe it should be “he”.

On the SAT you should try to be consistent with pronoun usage. You can’t suddenly switch from “his” to “they” when referring to the same subject.

‘he’, since ‘they’ is plural and ‘someone’ is singular. also it’s already mentioned ‘his’ so you use ‘he’ and not ‘she’

Ok thanks. The book didn’t really explain well… or I just didnt understand.

“he” is wrong as well…“someone” is neither male nor female in essence. It is a pronoun that refers to an unspecified person who could be male or female. Correct is “If someone loses his or her way in the airport, he or she can ask any employee for directions.” I wouldn’t recommend using Kaplan.
