Pronunciation

There are a whole bunch of colleges I don't know how to pronounce, so I'm going to fix that before I embarrass myself. Here's a list:

Lehigh
Bowdoin
Brandeis
Swarthmore
Bucknell
Muhlenberg
Wharton (Penn)
McDonough (Georgetown)
Yeshiva
Elon
Occidental
SUNY
Geneseo
Oswego
Urbana-Champaign

Please give the phonetic spellings of these so I can stop being clueless. Feel free to add to the list if you want.

I'll start with a couple:

LEE-high
BOW (as in bowtie)-din
BRAN-dice
Buck-NELL (many don't get that one)
Yesh-EE-va
SUNY (SOO-nee) Geneseo I've heard it both EE-o and AY-o
Os-WEE-go (pretty sure)

I have a question:

Wellesley? Is it pronounced Wells-lee?

Wells-LEE, yes.

Oss-i-den-tal

Eeee-lon

War-ton

Sa-warth-more

SUNY actually stands for State University of New York, it's an acronym.

As an added note, many people pronounce "Swarthmore" as "SWATH-more" -- a dialectal thing. It's normally pronounced with "war" that has an 's' in front, a soft 'th' after, and 'more' at the end.

Urbana-Champaign= er-banna shampayne

So far:
Lehigh=LEE-high
Bowdoin= BOW (as in bowtie)-din
Brandeis= BRAN-dice
Swarthmore= swore-th-more
Bucknell=Buck-NELL
Muhlenberg= myoo-len-burg
Wharton (Penn)=War-ton
McDonough (Georgetown)= ???
Yeshiva=Yesh-EE-va
Elon=Eeee-lon
Occidental=Oss-i-den-tal
SUNY= (SOO-nee)
Geneseo=jenneh-see-yo/jenneh-sayo
Oswego=Os-WEE-go
Urbana-Champaign=er-banna shampayne
Wellesley=Wells-LEE

Another big one!

Amherst is not "AM-herst" but rather, "AM-erst." In other words, the "h" is silent.

I knew a girl whose last name was McDonough... "Mc-Donna"... don't know if that's the way the b-school pronounces it.

How about pronunciation for Goizueta, Emory's b-school?

Actually, I've always heard "Wellesley" pronounced as "WELLS-lee," with the stress on the first syllable.

Isn't "Occidental" (both the word and the college) pronounced more like Ox-i-dental?

I second Mc-Donna, perhaps though better as Mc-Dunna?

Occidental does sound like Ox-i-DEN-tal.
McDonough (Georgetown) is Mac-DUN-ah
Muhlenberg - MULE-in-berg

Oswego is actually pronounced aw-SWEE-go.

and Urbana Champaign, er-BAH-naw and the word Champaign.
People there call it Chambana (sham-BAH-naw) :D

I've heard Goizueta as goy-Zweh-tuh.

Correct. And the school's common nickname around LA is "Oxy." I don't think I've ever heard anyone say it as "Oss-i-den-tal."

and Urbana Champaign, er-BAH-naw

I'm pretty sure the first 'a' is pronounced /

As someone who has an Illinois accent, I'd say it:

Ur-banna Sham-payne.

I don't quite get the "naw". I've never heard anyone finish the name like that.

I'm pretty sure the first 'a' is pronounced /

People I know who've lived there say "a" as in "apple."

When I say BAH it is like the a in "apple."

Like when sheep say Bah.

And you're right it's not quite "naw" more like when you say "nah" to mean no.
My older brother went to UIUC; he says its like er-b

^^ when doing informal spellings, the 'a' is generally the /
