Proof Your School And Grades Matter

The ‘top school’ may be a futile effort to thwart off grade inflation as part of the selection process (i.e. not rely on grades alone) - but it’s not like top schools don’t have the issue either…

The article linked below, summarizing some key points in the book, says that GPA isn’t as important, but school matters.

I don’t agree with a lot of this article…especially the fuel it adds to the perpetual CC Liberal Arts argument. I also know people at those companies that haven’t gone to elite schools, but it’s another point of view for this thread.

Also…there is some other good advice in this article for what kids in school should do if they think they want a job at one of these companies when they graduate.

I’ve hired for top law firms in NYC for over 20 years and schools matter. We (and other firms like the current one, because they all have the same procedure) only recruit from certain schools, although we recruit at different schools for minority applicants. However, if a candidate has a hard science degree from a good school with a good transcript in the science program, we would be delighted to meet that candidate even if the law school wasn’t one of the usual ones.

Re: #42

The claim that “Google, Apple, Microsoft want Elite Schools” is too general. I do know people who went to schools which are nowhere near elite who work at those companies. It could also very well be that the type of job within those companies matters – the level of pickiness about school prestige for computer professionals may differ from that for lawyers and “business” people.

Also, there are a lot more computer companies than those three, which (for some odd reason) seem to get an inordinate amount of attention on these forums as if they were the only computer companies worth working at.
