Proof

Has anyone seen (or would like to see) the movie Proof, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, and Jake Gyllenhaal? I believe it's set at the University of Chicago.

Here's the plot summary:
"The daughter of a brilliant but mentally disturbed mathematician (recently deceased) tries to come to grips with her possible inheritance: his insanity. Complicating matters are one of her father's ex-students who wants to search through his papers and her estranged sister who shows up to help settle his affairs."

only 40% of the people who actually received their tickets went to see it. the other 60% went to see a rerun of "harvard man"

That is because those 60% decided anything to do with mathematical proofs was simply too much for them...

I did see the movie, it was good, but the play was better. It was written by a Chicago alumnus. It was set at UChicago although the interior "at home" shots were in done in London from what I understand.

Hopefully you got BlacknBlue's joke, an allusion to the yield of Harvard vs. Chicago.

I don't think my joke was understood, it "explains" the yield...

Christ, this is why I came to hate the Chicago forum.

Let's trash every school that isn't Chicago and hole up in our ivory towers.

The problem with the Chicago forum is not Chicago people trashing other schools, its the direct opposite.

A legitimate question was asked about the movie proof, and our resident Chicago expert immediately turned it into a joke about acceptance rates.

So what if Chicago accepts 40% of applicants. So what if it's perceived to be a safety school for Ivies by some. It's a great school and the rest of this discussion is irrelevant

did the resident chicago expert ever say that uchi was not a great school? i believe the resident chicago expert has gone on record as stating that uchi is a world class institution. the resident chicago expert has also gone on record as saying that the people with uchi ties are soooo touchy about this subject of acceptance rates and low yields. your question is quite relevent. "so what if chicago accepts 40% of applicants." yes, so what?

uchi apologists are so caught up and confused about uchi's place in the social order of universities. quality should not be confused with desirability. this is going to hurt, so those of you who are weak of heart or thin of skin can stop reading here.

uchi provides a wonderful education, it has produced its share of nobel laureates and otherwise wonderful people, however, among our high school students who otherwise have the stats and other credentials to get into an ivy league school or mit, caltech, amherst and a few others just do not give uchi the same desirability as those schools. since none of those schools can be deemed a safety because of low admission rates, they must all be classified as reaches, so when those students go looking for a quality safety, they look for a place of great reputation and HIGH acceptance rates. so what is wrong with that? nothing, but someone will always refute that by saying that their s has a friend who knows a person that got accepted to yale, but chose uchi (probably because of merit money, but let's not quibble), so based upon that one instance, the resident chicago expert is wrong on all counts. that's fine too, but deep down, they know the truth. btw, did nw beat michigan?

one other note, doesn't uchi people have a sense of humor?

...yeah, so back to the movie Proof...

My son (a first-year) attended and enjoyed it, but commented that one should not expect the math professors to be handsome. While we were up for family weekend, we did pass the bench where the heroine sat ... very picturesque.

The other school that gets slammed all the time on these boards is, interestingly, Harvard. I wish that idad and b&b would agree to disagree. Both provide useful information on this forum on regular basis, and the constant bickering does little good. Let's give it a rest, gentlefolk.

harvard deserves slamming, but who slams uchi?

Pretty much all IMO stars in the past chose Harvard (to lesser extent, Princeton/CalTech/MIT), not Chicago. Time to find a better joke. ;)

who wouldn't?
