Proper Attire

My daughter( a freshman music ed, vocal emphasis) was selected by her voice teacher to participate in a master class. I am wondering if a floor length or tea length dress would be more appropriate? I am inclined to think tea length as this is during the day but wanted some advice. How formal should the dress be? Any recommendations as to style? T hanks.

Have her check with her teacher. This can depend on school, venue, master teacher etc. I would not think a gown is necessary…but she’s probably not working with Renee Fleming at a professional venue with a general audience (which happened for one of my D’s friends where she did wear a gown). In many cases, I think that “audition wear” would be appropriate…but best to check…you never know bc nice slacks (particularly for a mezzo) could be fine too.

Hello and congratulations to your daughter. It’s very nice to get selected to participate in a master class. My daughter, a junior, recently participated in one with a pretty well known opera singer. In the picture she posted she is wearing a tea length dress - something she auditions in. The master class was during the day, free to attend as a member of the audience, and not in the school’s largest hall - so those are some of the factors that would lead to wearing a tea length dress vs. a gown. Nice pants would be okay, too, in the same circumstances. As always, she should check with her studio teacher.

Thank you for your response. I will have her check with the teacher. She is on spring break and we hoped to get it this week. No not Renee Fleming (darn).

Thank you for the congratulations! She is very excited. I appreciate the confirmation about the tea length. I just had a feeling she would be overdressed in the other. And congratulations you your daughter as well.

A nice, knee-length dress is most appropriate, or pants and a sweater or jacket if she is a mezzo. Something she would wear for an audition or a NATS local round. Closed toe heels and tights or panty-hose. She doesn’t want to overdress or look like she rolled in from a picnic! And definitely, go shopping with her while she’s home- I remember those trips and they were great fun.

I always appreciate your comments. Thank you for the advice. And yes, those shopping trips are priceless.

Short, medium or knee length or long. last I looked the map showed USA. Nothing wrong with affectations but they can confuse those of us who are from “the states”. Easier to keep it simple.

I do live in the states but thanks. It is about 3-4 inches below the knee.

Thanks everyone for your help. She found a lovely, tea length floral in blue and white.
