Hello everyone. I've just been admitted as a transfer(sophomore) into the university, and I'm just trying to put everything together now. I found out the status of my application through OneStart, an I'm unsure when the admission packet is going to come in the mail. I was hoping that someone could tell me how to take the first steps into properly enrolling there.

For housing, is there a form I can fill out online? I'm actually very worried about the housing right now. If the housing packet comes in the mail in a week, then that means I have to fill it out and wait for another two weeks until I find out my standing.

When do I have to pay the full tuition and the housing bills? Is the full bill due before the first day of class?
How do you properly register for classes?

If I haven't been to any orientation or anything, how many days before the first day of class should I get there?
Anything else I should know?
I'd be so grateful if you guys can help me through my first steps. Thanks so much.

Hi LikeJazz-

Congrats on your admission. I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Re: Housing
On the OneStart self-service page, you will see a section on Campus Services. Click on RPS Housing Application and you will be able to apply for housing online. When you apply online you need to make the $200 advance payment by credit card.

Re: Paying your Bill
At orientation, we parents were told that IU bills around the 20th of the month with payment due on the 10th of the next month. You don't have to pay the full amount due on the monthly statement, but if you choose to pay the minimum due there will be a $30 service fee.

Again, on the Onestart self-service page, find the section called Bursar and Financial Aid. Click Access E-bill, then View Accounts, then choose Most Recent Statement from the drop down box. This will be the bill that came out in July and is due on 8/10th. It is possible that your admission was after the July statements were processed, so you might not have a statement to view yet.

You can also click on Bursar Account Summary back on the Onestart page to see if any activity has been recorded for you yet.

Don't hesitate to call the bursar's office if you have any questions.

Re: Registration
I'm sure the packet you receive in the mail will explain what you are expected to do to register for classes. But before it comes, you can look for classes that are still available via Onestart again. (You can also get to the class offerings from the registrars page.) That way you can have a preferred schedule ready when you meet with your advisor.

Re:When to Arrive
Movein day for dorm residents is Wednesday, 8/22nd. That is when Welcome Week starts, and classes begin Monday, 8/27. The packet will probably tell you when you will be meeting with your advisor.

Good luck!

Thank you so much. Your response clarified everything. Looks like I'll have to wait to get the packet because there's no bill yet.

You're welcome. I'm glad I could help.

BTW - move in week is absolutely chaotic. I got to move in early last year and it was much less stressful, when others came in there was little parking, and it was pretty crazy. If you want to pay I think it's $50 to come a day early, it's worth it, IMO. We got out fee waived luckily. However keep in mind that many dining halls aren't open earlier than Wednesday, I learned that out the hard way.

I really have no problem coming in early. However, I'm just so concerned about the housing right now because I haven't been assigned one. What does it mean to sleep on the lounge? Does that mean sleeping in an area where students just relax and watch t.v and everything like that? If so, that would be very uncomfortable, especially if I'll have to do that for a couple weeks.

The lounges they would have you sleep in have doors that you can lock, they are essentially big secluded rooms at the end of the halls. I'd rather be in one of those for a week than my dorm room.

That really doesn't seem too bad. How many people to one room?

Not sure exactly, I think some had 4 in them though, which would be a bit too much.
