The District of Columbia Bowl Commission is continuing its work to bring a bowl game either to RFK Stadium or the new Nationals Park. It hopes to have the inaugural bowl in mid- to late-December 2008, and it is aiming for one of the participants to be a service academy team, starting with Navy in 2008 and Army in 2009.

The commission will submit a proposal for the game -- to be called the Congressional Bowl -- to the NCAA on April 1. An answer likely will come a month later.

In addition to the petition to the NCAA, a number of hurdles still need to be cleared. Among them are finding a location and title sponsor, and determining opponents for the service academies. The bowl group expects to have a television deal completed soon. ...

Not quite sure how that would work with Navy. They already have an "At Large" bowl slot in the poinsettia bowl each year for at least the next 4 bowl games. This year, 2008,2009,and 2010. Assuming they are bowl eligible. Not sure if that bowl would want Navy able to back out of their bowl every 3rd year. Also not sure if Navy would want that either. They are currently guaranteed to be in a bowl game. Why would they risk that? Who knows.....

Although Navy’s football team will fly across the country later this month to play in San Diego’s Poinsettia Bowl, players could have only a 45-minute bus ride this time next year, if plans go forward to create a new bowl game in Washington, D.C.

The District of Columbia Bowl Commission has until April 1 to submit a proposal to the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s bowl certifying board, said Marie Rudolph, one of the commission’s two principals. The NCAA will look at game sites, conferences tie-ins and corporate sponsorship before deciding whether to approve the game....

Newly proposed D.C. bowl game could be in Mids' sights
Navy AD Gladchuk working hard on bowl negotiations
By Sandra McKee | Sun reporter

SAN DIEGO - As an independent, Navy doesn't have to wait for a conference championship to be determined to resolve bowl possibilities. It can plan years ahead to line up bowl commitments, and with that in mind athletic director Chet Gladchuk is hard at work.

The AD said today there are a lot of "ifs" to be worked out, but if the NCAA approves the newly proposed Congressional Bowl in Washington D.C., at either the Nationals' new baseball stadium or RFK, this April, the Mids will likely play in the new December bowl.

"But there is nothing in the bank on any front," said Gladchuk. "We're looking at every possibility as we do every year."

Gladchuk said he is also hoping to have Navy back at the Poinsettia Bowl in 2010, but said that while the Mids have proven a good bowl choice here, there is nothing definitive as yet. He is also looking for a 2009 bowl.

Mark Neville, associate executive director of the Poinsettia Bowl, said the organization and Navy "is a natural tie," that nothing is finalized.

"We've loved our relationship with the Naval Academy," Neville said. "And we're definitely working together" in discussions about 2010.

The Mids have sold 19,000 tickets for Thursday night's Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium, where a crowd of more than 44,000 is expected.

"As an independent, we have to work a little harder," Gladchuk said. "If the D.C. bowl is sanctioned, we would likely be there, providing we win enough games to be eligible."

The last three years Navy has had a bowl promised by mid-January for the end of the year. It is a track record Gladchuk said he would like to keep intact.

"But right now I have nothing definitive for 2008, 2009 or 2010," he said. "That's the way it is as an independent and it's OK -- until the year we don't go to a bowl. Then everyone will be asking why aren't we in a conference."

Gaskins champ

Left guard Anthony Gaskins gave his quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada a nudge at just the right time Monday night when the team was enjoying a playful night at a local go-kart course and won the competition.

"I took a lot of junk from my teammates before the final," said Gaskins. "Kaipo and I were battling all night, but I gave him a nudge in a corner and that was that."

After the win, Gaskins was still hearing it from his quarterback.

"I got a little cocky," said Kaheaku-Enhada, who had won the preliminary heat. "Instead of just driving, I started playing around with Gaskins. I should have just drove and it would have been over."

Today, the team enjoyed an afternoon at the San Diego Zoo and tomorrow it will meet Utah for a Poinsettia Bowl luncheon at the USS Midway Museum.
