Pro's and Cons about UMD

<p>Congratulations to all those who have been accepted!!! Many of you have a very tough decision that you will have to make within the next few months that will impact the rest of your life, so I thought I would share some of my experiences with you guys to aid you in making this difficult decision. </p>

<p>Pro's
-academics- there could be an argument to put this in the con's category because some teachers just cant teach, but for the most part, the teachers here are pretty good.
-Location- You can find just about anything within a short drive from campus, and there are busses that are free for students
- research opportunities- research as an undergraduate is vital for graduate/medical schools and UMD has a plethora of research opportunities for undergraduates, something many schools
don't have
-extracirricular activities- no matter what your interests are, with over 500 clubs, there is bound to be something that fits your interests
-parties- just about every day there are parties going on. We are even in the top 20 party schools
-Living and Learning Programs- The Honors College Programs are a great way to meet people with similar interests as you as well as provide you with rigorous academics
-make some great friends- you will get the opportunity to meet some really amazing people here and have a ton of fun</p>

<p>con's</p>

<p>-Weather-college park weather is so bipolar that it will be 10 degrees with snow one day, and the next day it will be 65 degrees.
-Campus- Whilst it is certainly a georgeous campus, it is way too big and you might have to walk long distances to get to class
-Food- The food here is certainly substandard
-Class size- with over 27,000 undergraduates, alot of the introductory classes are HUGE with over 300 students
-Sports- if you are a college sports fan like me, don't get your hopes up
- So much harder than high school- no matter how smart you were in high school, you are going to have to put in a huge effort to be successful</p>

<p>Nice list.</p>

<p>One thing I will say though is I don’t think challenging classes should be listed as a con. If everything was easy I don’t think Maryland would be regarded in the way it is starting to be now.</p>

<p>Will admit we have had a tough run in football and basketball but I am thoroughly convinced the future looks very bright! One of the best wide receiving cores in the country next year with Diggs, Leak and Long. Just need our quarterbacks to get healthy (and stay that way lol).</p>

<p>As for basketball, give turge a chance to bring his guys in. We are so young and it is evident in our play. We should be annual top 25 in a few seasons.</p>

<p>"-Class size- with over 27,000 undergraduates, alot of the introductory classes are HUGE with over 300 students"</p>

<p>My understanding is that most research universities will have introductory classes with very large enrollments. It’s the nature of the beast.</p>

<p>…and if you have AP credits to get you out of intro classes, you won’t see classes nearly that big… For the large section classes there are always smaller discussion sections where you can get as much help as you choose to from the TA. (and if they can’t help you, there are other TA’s and the professor to go to for help).</p>
