Hi, you wrote to me about the negatives of GW and positives of PItt. (I don't know how to reply in a private message.) We just returned from Pitt and my d. had a fabulous experience and will probably attend--especially as the price tag will be nominal and at gw huge--despite some scholarship money at GW/ Pitt certainly has a more real city (less gentrified and official city) feel than d.c. However, as a life time resident of the suburbs as you are too, I would not exactly agree with your assessment. I find D.C. very exciting for all kinds of reasons, but, again, I see the charm of Pitt. Not sure what you mean about ethnic and international possibilities at Pitt. Would love to hear from you concerning this. In any case, my d. will probably be at Pitt next year though there is still a small chance she will choose GW

Uhoh. They just called. They liked ASU. Got the royal tour. Now d is torn. They like that it is a "real" honors college. No decision. Wish Pitt early med school letter would come. That could help. Pitt is still in the running but it is much tougher now apparently. Darn nonrefundable airfare.

From what I've read, Pitt has more to offer than ASU. I would remind d of the Pitt facitilities, programs, internships, and opportunities for students.

I would second what nurse 123 said. We Know someone at Arizona. I think it is pretty remote compared to the vibrancy of Pitt but it depends if you like the desert and isolation.

i think that pitt is a much better choice also. the academics are much stronger

Also, do you know about the PittArts program where there are weekly emails sent to students advising them of free tickets (dinner out included) to see the ballet, opera, symphony, etc. It is supported by the alumni group--yet another fabulous perk--along with money for research and other perks for pitt students. I met a student who said that he had gone to 7 free dinners symphonies over the last several months.

What is the school spirit like at Pitt? Do the students walk around in Pitt clothing? Go to the sporting events?

Or does the student body get involved in the city; thereby, losing that community (college) spirit?

I am going to be a freshmen this year in Pitt, and when I visited on honors day, all I saw all over campus were people wearing Pitt clothing. From that short one day experience it felt to me like there was plenty of school spirit to go around. Plus everyone looked satisfied and happy.

I think I will go there...I am curious what kind of weather you get say about September-Aprilish..I do hope its more temperate than upstate NY.

It looks like it's going to be Pitt for us! Apparently D had a list of questions she asked to compare what was really important to her with both honors and engineering and all the right answers were on Pitt's side. She wants a flexible honors program more than a set of dorms or bldgs, she wants study abroad with her engineering and she wants to either double major or at least get a minor in something else besides the engineering (and is even considering philosophy!). She said the people in Pitt's honors office were most receptive to her ideas whereas the ASU people were not. Also, the opportunities with UPMC are unparalleled. The main thing I guess is that she said she felt like Pitt was "home" and she didn't get that feeling anywhere else she went, so I think the decision is made.

What is the campus like at Pitt? Does it have one or is it like NYU?

My son would consider double majoring in business and maybe bioengineering. Is that possible?

Hi. My d. had similar feelings. That is cool to see a consensus in that way. The Honors people sound fabulous.

Any word on the weather...Cuz I am planning to apply somewhere nice next year if the weather sucks.

I guess this web site answers my questions on double majors.

ha! weather... i have out of state friends and when they visit me, all they do is complain about the weather we have here in pittsburgh... but it's not too bad... winters are usually cold and snowy, but we don't have too many blizzards...mainly it is overcast, but by this time of year, the weather is usually pleasant.. i think it might be a little warmer than in upstate NY

Weather. . .we live in NE Ohio, and what I notice when we watch Pittsburgh weather reports is that when we get snow, Pittsburgh gets ice. They don't seem to get lots and lots of snow, like we do along Lake Erie or in upstate NY.

Mercymom: Great for you. I know you were worried that d. would
choose Arizona.

Dear All readers: We are still waiting to hear about Pitt scholarship and also we are still thinking about GW. It would be great if I could hear from some people in the International Affairs or Political Science/PHilosophy majors at Pitt to hear about the strengths fulfilling aspects of those majors. The Elliott School at GW is renown and my d might want to do Elliott if she decides on GW. Definitely we are leaning towad Pitt but want to hear more about P./P/ and International Affairs. We would appreciate hearing from Pitt students on these majors. THANKS
