Pros and Cons of Dartmouth

please be specific!!

PROs: IMO the best all-around undergraduate college experience which positions you to do whatever you want with your life upon graduation. (As evidenced by the school's many initiatives to preserve/enhance student life, and the large quote on the wall of the career services office which states "All Dreams Welcome Here.") Dartmouth has so many resources to help you find (or accelerate) your passion, and then they will fully support you to make that happen (whether it be with buckets of money, mentoring programs, or interviewing skills.) Other schools are notorious for preventing students from applying to certain grad schools to preserve their graduate placement rates. This is unheard of at Dartmouth. On a completely separate topic, Dartmouth does more than any other school to make you feel welcome and at home. Between the DOC trips and orientation, I was calling Dartmouth my 'home' in no time.

CONs: Hard to get in.

i looove the little town (so cute! it even had these twinkly lights...) !!!

The only con I can think of is pretty superficial:

Small town, fewer places to shop.

Hahaha, yeah.

Pros: Best college experience anywhere. Plethora of undergrad resources and grants, amazing academic culture (professors incredibly friendly and available, invite you over for dinner), great community, strong social life, lots of alumni loyalty, outdoor beauty, sophomore summer (get to know your entire class), one of the best study abroad programs in america (dartmouth RUN programs across languages AND majors - i.e. spanish in Madrid, philosophy in Edinburgh, Anthro in New Zealand, or Env. studies in Africa), great job recruiting, great advising and in turn grad placement, very inclusive social life (everyone invited to all parties).

Cons: Town is stuffy (with it was "hip" like Thayer Street at Brown), Winter can be long, perhaps not the best fit for everyone (I can see a city person looking for restaurants and shopping rather than sledding and house parties not loving it).

Hanover is so beautiful in the winter.

Cons: It's freakin cold.
Bad weather and heavy snow -> more partying inside -> excessive drinking

Pros:

I dont see any thing that really jumps regarding your chances at these tow top universites. Your GPA and test scores are good but not exceptional. I would say they are high reaches. But then that is just my opinion.

UCInterest, this isn't the right thread to post your "chance me"...

Pro: the outdoors. If you like sledding, skiing, snowball fights, swimming in rivers, kayaking, etc there are very few schools in that offer what Dartmouth has.

swimming in rivers and kayaking? really?

wow i love dartmouth even more now. I was always just imagining those brutal winters..

Haha. The winters can be rough. But I think there are definitely ways for you to take advantage of the cold weather.

I personally can't wait to go back... and to whoever said Hanover is gorgeous during the winter, you're absolute right.

Yeah nothing better than a Dartmouth/ New England Spring (Spring term ends in June) and Summer. Lots of river swimming, bbqs, rope swing jumping, kayaking, climbing, summer hiking etc to be had. Some of my fondest memories are from summertime.

One of my favorite terms was my senior winter. Some things to do: Ice skating on Occum pong, skiing at the skiway, snowball fights, sledding, etc plus lots of natural beauty.

"Occum Pong"...interesting typo ;-)

Lol true...never thought of that one!

Have come up with Hangover, NH and DirtyMouth College however.

Apparently some students used to flood their hallways and let it freeze over so they could play hockey through the dorm... That's pretty clever lol.

Never heard of that one. But Chi Heroet (being the hockey meatheads on campus) tried doing that and they were put on probation...for like years.

Really? My mom said they did it when she was there, on her floor... A while ago of course, but I found it pretty funny.

This is less superficial than you might think.

Wow dcd you're really bummed out about this small collegetown thing. Two threads in a row?
