Pros and Cons of Freshmen Connection

Interested to hear about the different experiences of either students or parents.
Students- What did you miss about not being on campus, problems with housing, finding roommates, or travel to and from campus? Feel excluded? Students serious about school? Ease of classes, access to advisors, etc. Anything else?

Parents - What were your biggest concerns about your 18 yr old getting an apt off campus? Any pleasant surprises or regrets?Any students and/or parents on the fence about Spring 2009?

OOS mom and S trying to make a decision...... Thanks

Hi College Mom - My d was in Freshman Connection last semester. There was another post on this site - I think it was called - deferred - where some of your questions were asked. This is my response. I would put it in one of those fancy boxes - but I don't know how.

Feel free to PM me -

My daughter is in an apartment with 3 other freshman connection girls. The apartment she is in is made a decision last year not to rent to freshman but they made that decision after she had given a deposit so she was allowed to live there. It was a bit of a hassle but it worked out. I'm not sure what the owners of the apartment are going to do this year.
There are other apartments like the Towers that do rent to freshman and there are lots of Freshman Connection kids there.
My daughter did have an opportunity to go on campus this semester but she couldn't sublet so she and all of her roommates are staying through the year.
Living in an apartment is certainly different than the dorms. To me, the dorms are preferable, but she has made the best of it.
If you want to PM me I will be happy to discuss everything further.

She did very well in her classes and is quite happy at Maryland.
I suggest that your kids go onto Facebook to see if there is a Freshman Connection or Spring Admit class of 2012 page started yet.

Will be happy to talk further.

If we enroll in freshman connections, then will we be considered as umcp student or will we have the same benefit as umcp student? And what will be on our final report card? will the paper show that we were not officially umcp student, but was enrolled in a program that serve in the same purpose as community college?
And finally, which one is more favorable? to stay in a less prestigious school(like UMBC) for the fall semester and transfer to UMCP in spring or just stick with the freshmen connection program?

Nunofyurbeesknees,

I've sent you a PM and look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks!

BubbleTea--
I am not a freshman connection student so I'm not sure about all the details you requested, but I can give an opinion for your last question. :)

I think that doing freshman connection is much more favorable than going to UMBC for a semester and transferring. You'll make friends at UMD, get to know the campus, be 100% sure all your classes will count towards your degree, etc. (And there are some great bubble tea places nearby. Not sure if UMBC has the same!!)
