Pros and Cons of GSP

I just got into GSP and I am a bit hesistant. I applied to CAS but got into this general studies program.

In getting into GSP, can i say that I "officially" got into NYU or do i tell people that I did nto get into NYU but rather another thing.

Also what are the pros and cons of the program. I don't want to be overecstatic and be disappointed cause of somethign I find distraughtening.

Thanks!

Hey would you mind posting your stats.

Ranked 3rd/30
GPA: 4.5/4
Took 3 College Courses at Clark University; B,B,A
SATs: 1760/2400

Math: 590, CR: 600, Writing: 570

Great Essay
Great Recommendations

I didn't have the greatest stat so i think my hook was my essay and recommendations.

I told people I got into NYU. GSP is the second largest school in NYU, you definitely have been accepted into NYU. I am really excited, you should be too.

Think about it over 35,000 applications...4,000 spots and I think 800 of them are GSP. Its something like 6% of people that didn't get into their first choice school get GSP. Its a pretty good accomplishment.

I think people in GSP generally are really smart but might be lacking in one area...not lacking in the sense that they are below average or average if you look at the whole picture, but just at NYU standards. At most places, a 590 math sat is pretty darn god, but that is a smidgen below the average of 610 math average of nyu.

;-)

is it safe to say that those entered into GSP wont get as much financial aid as those who get in the other colleges of their choice in the first place.

No, I don't believe so. We have the same consideration for need aid. Possibly merit aid, academic scholarships, no.

I got into GSP and my first Fin. Aid letter back in Dec. said 20,000.

wow im shocked to see a big package.

I really want to go to NYU...but hearing about people getting GSP and not hearing anything about my application has got me worried.

its pretty easy to figure out if youll get in or not.... by looking at the GSP official threads, you will know whether or not you will be accepted to GSP at the least... then around this time if you havent received an acceptance to GSP , it means your probably in to CAS

stonecold, I am thinking with my stats, at best I would be admitted with the GSP people...low chance for CAS. I am starting to worry quite a bit now.

what is your gpa/rank or estimated rank, and SAT score and what school are you applying too?

I "found" my packet today underneath a 3'5" stack of college papers, mail, and packets. It was dated the 16th. Anyways, I got home at 9pm today from the college and I've been up since then reading about this GSP program. I was disappointed, to be frank. But I suppose its better than nothing--- forcing myself to be really, really optimistic.

BUT. I found one factor that may have impacted my application: I DID NOT SEND IN MY UPDATED SAT SCORES!!!

Virgin pray for me.

My stats:
Ranked 4th or 7th (fluctuates every semester) / 400+
GPA: 3.7 asa of 6th semester
SAT I: critical reading: 600, 630, 640; math: 620, 630, 670; writing: 680
SAT II: 710, 680
Foreign Lang: 4 semesters of Italin (101,102,120,201)
College: taken at least 25 credits: geography, human development, business, history, criminal law, et cetera. GPA: ~3.7
AP: world history, biology, environmental science, psychology, us history, language, calculus, us government, microeconomics, physics, art history, literature
Extracurricular: President NHS, CSF secretary, Key Club, Interact President, President Asian Student Association, MOCK TRIAL outstanding lawyer in OC, speech and debate awards...

Great recommendation
Good statements

I attend a not-so-great school, Orange High School. Very diverse student body, but also not very intellectual. Our valedictorians have gone to Harvard, Yale, USC, in the last 3 years. This year's might go to a CSU (a close friend who ended up not applying to NYU because of the poor financial aid).

someone explain to me why? was it because they got my ~1800+ SAT scores from my first trial, and not the latest ones?

What is your major?

perhaps depends on which school u applied.

and also you are the type that fits GSP. Relatively good grades, but mediocre SAT scores (1800~1950 ish)

PROS:
small class size
professors are great and accessible
easier classes to get all the CAS requirements out of the way

CONS:
none really excpet sometimes there will be really stupid people in your class and the fact that you dont really get to choose any classes freshman year

thats the problem with the NYU committee... if your great in every aspect besides SAT score, youll get GSP'd......alot of the time these people deserve to get into CAS in spite of having non-perfect scores

What if youre great in every aspect BESIDES EC's? My EC's seem minimal compared to the EC's I see here.

Thank you to Noname for answering the question lol

an upside of gsp is you will most likely get more merit aid than you would if you were admitted to CAS. This is because you are competing with students who have lower stats...

i know a few people in GSP and its really not a bad program. I would say the worst thing about GSP is the stigma attached to it.
