Just wanted to know all the good and bad things you know about Ohio University. Also which school do you think is better Ohio University or Miami University of Ohio for a black prospective freshman? Please explain why. Thanks.

What would make a school better for a black freshman? I mean, I have no idea what criteria you’re talking about. Miami University in Oxford, OH, has a reputation for being a hard-drinking preppy party school Ivy League wannabe kinda place, and OU is a full-fledged university but in an economically depressed area. Don’t know what your chances for finding a part-time job are. I guess it depends on your major.

Ohio University isn’t that bad of a school. I just don’t think you would fit in well at Miami U (it’s nicknamed J Crew U for a reason). You can get a good job by going to Ohio University. The surrounding area does suck though

WOW, I never knew Miami OH had a reputation of being super-prep, but it totally makes sense.

I know two guys that went there, and they were both mega-prep/J crew types. Some times sterotypes are just plain true, lol.

Isnt Ohio University one of the biggest party schools in the nation?

Little Miami has a hilarious inferiority complex, so don’t go there.

Isn’t Ohio where they busted that sorority? Yeah, go there.

Miami is also a huge party school. Both schools are. Most large publics are

OU has a few standout programs, journalism being the one I can think of, but is generally known for being an okay party school. I’m from Ohio, and a lot of people use OU as a backup school. It has around 20k students and a larger campus in Athens, OH. The people I know who go there all seem happy to be there, but some of them are big partiers, and both of the girls joined sororities their freshman years.

Miami is generally considered a better school academically, but it will also probably be less diverse (you included your ethnicity, so I imagine you may care). Miami also has a very strong greek community, and is known, as another poster said, for being very preppy.

Well, since none of these people go to OU, I’ll chime in with some informed information.

I will be a junior at OU next year, and I am a black student.
OU is one of the best schools in the country for journalism (which I am studying), and one of the best in the state for Business, engineering as well as the Honors Tutorial College, which is extremely selective. OU has a vibrant black community, of about 1,000-2,000 depending on the year.
Def a party school, but there is plenty else to do on campus. In fact, Campus Crusade for Christ is the largest organization.

Where else are you looking? What do you want to study?

if your looking for a good school in ohio with diversity, check out kent state

Con: It is not OSU.

@OU student. That is good to hear that it has a vibrant black community. This sounds like a school I’ll definitely put in my top choices. I am also looking at Miami University(Ohio), Indiana University(Bloomington), Michigan State University, and that’s about it for now. I want to study either Biology or Biochemistry (for medical school). Do you like attending OU? Do people from OU usually get accepted into medical school?

Does anyone have any “controversial” stories about Miami. I heard this story about one of the sororities getting wasted and trashing some fancy country club

OUs sororities did the same thing, but miami is a bunch of stuck up rich folk…

my high schools miami students all fit the stereotypes

I believe there have been two or three instances in the last month where Miami sororities have… gotten wasted and trashed some places, without getting too detailed.

Also, yes, Miami is primarily preppy, however, that does not mean that if you are not preppy that you will not find like-minded friends just as easily.

Ok I’ll try to simplify this:

-Miami has a slightly better academic reputation in most subjects (example of an exception would be journalism)
-OU is significantly more racially and ethnically diverse
-OU is in a bad area, but Miami isn’t exactly in the middle of a bustling, vibrant city
-both are major party schools
-Miami has a much bigger Greek scene. Greek life exists at OU but is a smaller part of the social life
-OU is somewhat larger, and has many more postgraduate students

Given that diversity is an issue for you, I’d go with OU over Miami. However, Ohio State is, at this point, largely seen as the best public school, academically, in Ohio. It also is quite diverse. So if you have the grades and don’t mind the size, I’d go with OSU.

I actually disagree with wearecollege’s advice. Kent State (unless you’re going into education, nursing, or fashion design, in which case, it’s great) has a pretty blah academic reputation. Obviously the school has some excellent students and some good programs, but the joke in Ohio is “Kent read, Kent write, Kent remember what I did last night.” At least at my school, Kent was where kids went when they didn’t get into OSU, OU or Miami.

@mochamaven. Thanks for letting me know all of the details of both schools. I think I like OU’s diversity and social scene, but as far as academics I think I like Miami better. I’ll just keep doing my research on the two schools and figure out what school offers a better atmosphere for me. By the way I already looked at OSU and I discovered it’s way too big and has teacher assistants teaching classes all the time. I’ve also heard they try to weed you out of your classes.

digmedia’s son is a recent graduate and is very helpful regarding answering questions about Ohio U. I’d suggest PMing them. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/members/digmedia-19342.html

Scholar93,

You have not posted your grades and SAT scores, but if they are strong, you may want to look into the OU Honors Tutorial College (HTC) there. We are from out of state and my son got into much higher ranked schools, but let me tell you that the OU HTC on its own, is on par with these other schools and my son almost chose to go there. Look it up.

I think that the OU HTC is also looking to increase diversity…so your background can be advantageous. After we spent two days at OU HTC, we almost felt like we were a star-high school QB’s they were trying to recruit. And the perks to be in that program are exceptional. You get all the perks of being in a small school (individual attention) along with all the facilities that a large school offers.

Good luck.

Have you visited either college? I thought Miami would be a great fit for my daughter. It has a good academic reputation and isn’t small, but not exceptionally large, either. The campus is beautiful.

After taking the tour, she said that Miami was “too white and too preppy” for her.
