I am an OOS parent, wanting to learn more about UCF, so thought about asking here........cannot visit, son is into Physics, Math, Comp Science.

Are the buildings new and modern? If anyone knows more about the above majors, please update this thread, thanks!

I don’t attend UCF, yet, but I have visited and done my research on the school.

For starters, it’s also one of the youngest universites in Florida. The campus is great, very well thought out (“circle within a circle” design), clean, and high-tech. The Engineering/Computer Science Building (the Harris Building) is especially new and well equipped. On top of that, they’re constantly building, a reason why they’re nicknamed Under Construction Forever.

For Computer Science, which is the major I intend to enroll in, is one of UCF’s strong points; it’s THE school for Computer Science/Engineering in Florida apart from FIT. What’s great about the engineering programs at UCF is the fact that they have strong industrial partnerships with Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Harris Corporation, and etc. If my mind serves me correctly, many CS, CE, EE students end up interning with the mentioned companies. Also, one of the presentations they had at the open house indicated that 20% of UCF graduates end up working for Harris Corporation, which is a great place to start out fresh out of college. Additionally, they consistantly place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the regional Programming Competitions (about 20 years straight or about) and have also performed very well internationally (highest placement abroad was 10th I believe; which is VERY good). This all atests to UCF’s strengths in CS.

There are few direct comparisons between schools in the field of CS, but I’d say UCF is up there, if not notable.

Great, thanks! How does UCF compare to lets say U of Miami in FL? Doesn’t the campus feel very large?

I don’t know much about UM other than it’s a private school and therefore expensive! So I couldn’t compare.

UCF’s campus is fairly large but at the same time very accessible because of the “circle within a circle” design, making it fairly easy to go from one side of the campus to another.

Here’s a map of the campus: [UCF Campus Map](http://campusmap.ucf.edu/flash/index.php)'

Just a tidbit, the school has an undergrad population of 50,000, but the College of Engineering and Computer Science has 5,000 students.

Good to know, thanks so much. Which other colleges are you considering?

D is a senior and OSS (from IL) is not in a math or science major, but most of her friends are and this is what she says.

Campus - Large, tons of fun things to do, school spirit much better now that they have the stadium on campus.

Housing - lots of new dorms esp. if you are either willing to pay (Towers) or smart (Apollo - honors) or into community service and smart (Apollo - LEAD scholars)

Engineering/science - new buildings, internships at NASA and Disney (ride technology)

Bio science - new buildings Brand new medical school affiliation.

If you have any other questions, pm me!
