pros/cons/in between for using a mac at college

just wondering if anyone has run into any problems or advantages by having a mac computer at college. if so can you share your experiences thanks

So far these two years with my Mac have been nothing but flawlessness. Seriously, I don't have any cons with using it a school.

Con: you paid more than you had to just for a fancy OS

Pro: you paid more than you had to just for the best OS.

One thing PC users can do that Mac users can't...

here because i'm tired of typing rebuttals

Con: people will think you have a mob mentality because you bought a mac

1) because everyone else has one and
2) because it's "shiny"

Dunno if it's just me.. but ever since i got my mac 3 years ago. it's still running well. No virus bogging me down or anything.. on the other hand.. my sister's window's based laptop.. only 1 year old.. has seen significant slowdown and problems.

Leopard FTW.

don't download random stuff.solved.kthx

^Pretty much.

the only reason my sister's Lenovo is so slow is because she downloads all kinds of crap onto it.

I have some beef with Apple because of...

*Well, I dont like proprietary hardware, I like options.

*A lot of Mac users look at PC users like they are less than human...which is why PC users pick on them.

*Steve Jobs puts toooo much culture into their products. An entire year before Apple discussed its partnership with Starbucks, I predicted that they would have something going. Now all that has to happen is Gap jumps on the bandwagon.

*You are pretty much obligated to get Apple Care because Apple uses proprietary hardware. If Ram goes in your iMac, you don't have a computer for a long time.

*Apple has the same monopoly on hard disk music players as Microsoft has on operating systems, and no one says a damn thing about it.

I don't hate Apple, but I just hate people who defend them tooth and nail when they are A) Not tech people. One girl told me OSX was better because she liked the shortcuts more.....yea. B) They live in that "Apple Culture". The people who drink Starbucks and wear Gap clothes with thick glasses. Typical hipsters.

I personally don't consider the Gap to be the pinnacle of cultured fashion. I am certainly no fashionista, though.

Well...RAM in macs is not only made by Apple, you can buy and put in the RAM yourself.

and Apple does not have a monopoly on hard disk players, there are tones of options, the ipod is just the best selling one.

Sounds a lot like the iPod to me.

reply: hisgracefillsme

really?

Perhaphs you didn't read the part where it says "exclusive control" or "makes possible the manipulation of prices". That alludes to the idea of no competition or no alternatives. Sure, the alternatives might be inferior goods for some, but they still exist. The ipod does not control prices for mp3 players. If the zune 80gb was offered at $150 as opposed to the current $250, you better bet the ipod price would drop.

This is similar to the reason as to why google is not considered a monopoly (yet). Although it dominates the market, there are viable alternatives such as yahoo which still attract hundreds of millions of people yearly. I'm not really sure how the yahoo/google deal will work out though, seems to me that its just an expansion of google reach as opposed to yahoo?

And I also don't know if in this case a monopoly is as bad as it sounds. You have to realize that apple is selling hardware that will last for years. Its not a service which they force people to pay for continually. That means that apple has to continue innovation regardless of their market position in order to keep selling hardware. Its run into this problem lately as the market for new ipods has diminished since many people already have old ipods. Plus, since ipods aren't a necessary good, supply/demand still applies. I'm not sure apple could manipulate prices to extremes, say $500 for an 80gb ipod and still expect people to buy. Anyone else want to comment on this?

Please don't just randomly start hating. btw, I also hate ipods and think they are pos, but I won't mind getting the touch for free in the student deal :)

We're not saying the Macs are bad. They're perfectly fine computers, but they're also overpriced and definitely NOT worth it for other reasons as well (all listed above). You can get a 2x better computer with the same price if you get a PC...

shocka lets go down ur list, I'm not a mac user btw

What options do you want? Apple already offers many options similar to other manufacturers.

They do? Isn't the opposite true as well...I've probably seen more of the opposite than your statement :)

Because culture is bad? That makes no sense. Nobody seems to hate Google culture. I'd bet Dell/HP/Toshiba/Sony execs would LOVE to somehow create culture in their products. They try, and fail miserably (look at those HP ads).

What? Replace it with whatever ram you want. I have never seen anybody actually get applecare, especially if you are confident you won't be doing anything dumb with your laptop and/or have friends who could prob fix your problems easily.

A. I am a tech person

haha bring the mac v pc war on

PLEASE find this deal for me, I've been looking for a while now. Seriously, I'm putting you up to this challenge. I want similiar build quality as well, I'm hoping this lasts 4 years.

$1199 for
1. macbook, white (I'm sure you know the specs)
2. ipod touch
3. hp printer

The way I see it, there are the exact same two types of people on both sides.

In the "people who use PCs" corner, there are: technologically clueless people who only use PCs because they've never used anything else or they're too cheap to shell out the cash, and really techy people who moan and whine about Macs because of "proprietary software" or "no right-click."

In the "Steve Jobs Fan Club" corner, there are: technologically clueless people who only use Macs because they've never used anything else or just like the "user-friendliness," and really techy people who say that "OSX's UNIX frame make Macs more secure", while at the same time point out "dual-boot capabilities to provide the same options PCs do."

It's two sides of the same coin. So really, can't we all just get along and say that Macs are just the prettier, spendthrift siblings of the more austere, down-to-business PCs?

Good Game, one of my Lenovos (core duo 3000 series so I made it comparable to the Apple Macbooks rather than the MPros):

2gb memory
120gb

On sale $580 AFTER taxes and fees. + 4 USB outlets and all those other features Apple doesn't have.

Meanwhile, the $1199 Mac also has 120gb but only 1gb memory. Oh and btw, I have the Macbook too so I know all the similarities and differences. Meanwhile, you don't own any and pretty much claim that Apple has no competitors in terms of price and quality overall. I'm trying to claim that there is.

Please don't say it's a "war." Do you really think I'm here to argue with you? This is all about trying to save some money for those who don't have much and yet preserving the same, if not better, quality and features as a Mac (though if you are really tech. savvy, you would realize Lenovo has more features and is preferred by most PROFESSIONALS who actually WORK in the field).

Thus, I just gave an example of a bargain I found. I hope this helps others who value professionalism and frugality.

I got my Compaq Presario c700 with 2G memory and 200 RAM for about $700 with tax and shipping, PLUS an extra $180 mail-in rebate. And it's a NICE computer.

I will admit that if you're going into the arts, you probably do need a Mac because they're just better suited for that field and have some awesome software for it.

However, my school got a bunch of Mac laptops through a grant, and even the teacher (who is a self-professed Mac lover) hated them because they were just crap laptops. So I suppose it just depends.
