Daughter looking at colleges. Hubby went to RU himself and loved it. Daughter concerned about the size and just being a number, as well as time being taken up by waiting for buses. She does not yet know what she wants to do and so will be taking general courses.(may like to do advertising/marketing for sports?)...she just visited Ramapo yesterday with my hubby and she FELL IN LOVE WITH IT....says how relaxing the atmosphere is and how updated the dorm rooms are. She loves that there is no commuting between classes as well. Both colleges will be about the same price. Just wanted to see if anyone experienced either college..and to list pros AND cons please.. thanks..just want to make sure the choice will be a smart one.

The two are just so different, it’s like comparing apples and oranges: a giant flagship vs. a smaller liberal arts public college.

Ramapo is not really nationally known, but if your D wants to stay in New Jersey, it’s fine. If she wants to leave the area after graduation, a Rutgers degree will offer better name recognition. However, it sounds as if she had a strong positive reaction to Ramapo, and she will do better where she is happy.

Rutgers is very big, and kids need to be pretty confident and self-directed to thrive there. The academic resources are extremely deep and the opportunities for high-level achievement are there, but academic advising for the undecided is kind of weak. I think your D has an accurate sense of what might bother her there.
