k-theory,

More people than you might think, actually.

because someome on a train or in the street can do it to you when they are trying to steal your beloved ipod. It was even in the news (happened in a manhattan subway station).

who buys music these days?

I do, because I know that I'm sure not talented enough to sing and produce the music I enjoy. Maybe someday you'll realize the truth about piracy and that its no laughing matter.

Wait UCLAri, come again? I'm not following you...If iTunes allows you to burn CDs that you can listen to in any music CD player (i.e: your car), then there should be no problem being able to move or use your songs in any way you want to. Are you saying that iTunes burns a CD that can only be played on certain computers or something?

I think UCLAri is talking about that the only thing that can play straight AAC files are iPods and computers. To play it in your car, iTunes converts the file in to a plain audio file and burns it on to a CD. Of course, this does allow you to re-rip the songs into MP3s without problem and play them on other things.

HelloKiki,

No, it doesn't actually. It's a fairly difficult process getting files back to MP3 format, and I don't actually know if the files bought off of iTunes can actually be reformatted in any easy way.

No, what I was saying is if you burn the AAC songs onto an audio CD (the default setting), you can rip them off that CD into MP3s. It's a well known exploit that has been there since the start of the iTunes music store. It still works in iTunes 7 because I had to do it to move my music to my computer at work.

Ah. I always thought that the metadata stopped that. I stand corrected.

I'm very tempted to go for an 8GB nano, my 2.5 year old 4GB blue 1st gen mini is starting to look a little long in the tooth...

Go for it, Kirby!
I just replaced my green 1st gen mini with a refurb 30gig and couldn't be happier!

HelloKiki, thanks for clearing up the whole iPod/music CD thing, I'm guessing the main reason that people would download all of these programs to accomplish the same thing is either: a. they don't know about the CD trick, or b. they do know about it and don't want to suffer the loss in quality

8GB Nano rainbow kirby, have you considered the 8GB Creative Zen? I'm checking Amazon.com and the Zen looks like its a better deal...is there any particular reason that you really want an iPod as opposed to any other MP3 player?

I'm trying to get my IPOD from the following site: www.searchchips.com/veronicamuo

yeah i got a pink one for my bday =) YAY!

other than the 30gb black video ipod i think they're meaningless. the nanos were so cool but now that they made them look like the old ipod minis they just suck. 80gb is a LOT, and 30gb just fits. it's cheaper anyway. however, they say that in december a new one will be out, so for the ones who're going to buy, just wait!
