Hi! Son is ready to accept an offer from A and M after a visit last month that went really well. My concern is that he will be an out of state student, and we didn't find out alot about if dorms stay open during breaks, how easy is it to get to the airports (not just College Station) but Houston by the bus service, and any other thoughts on being one of relatively few not from Texas. Any input to put a Mom's mind as ease would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Not sure about dorms being open during break, but there is a van/bus that takes kids from College Station to bush airport and back because my dd has used it.

The dorms stay open during thanksgiving break and spring break. During winter break they dont, but they'll put everyone in a special temporary dorm if they need it.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure he would be coming home for the longer breaks, but doubt we could schedule Thanksgiving weekend. Is there a link for the bus service? Or a name that I could check into? The flights into College Station all seem to have a 4 or 5 hour layover in Dallas or Houston from our area, so hooking up with the bus may actually be the quickest option. Also, do Freshman usually move in the week of "Fish Camp"?

S probably attend session F fish camp, then move in straight into dorm last day. Then we will join him on Monday to help him to move in and settle.

BTW, NSC housing on campus is only $20 half room per night. My S2 will have to fly in early and leave the day after conference. Already check with housing, is OK. You can register housing online for the NSC. Last week when we sign up there is only few seesions left for NSC in Engineering.

If U need further information, contact us directly. I have been doing a lot of research for my son from airfare, airport ground shuttle, housing, scholarships, honor dorm etc

And I would bet there would be a LOT of Houston/Dallas kids willing to drop him off at the airport on their way home.

Anyone know an affordable ground transportation between Austin airport and Easterwood Airport /TAMU? The Blue Van Shuttle too expensive. For us, Austin is the best option for travel time (direct), price (shortest distance and duration) and ground shuttle (only slightly further then Houston).

Howdy! First of all, congratulations on the acceptance!!! May I be only one of many to welcome your son to Aggieland! We're all looking forward to having the new freshmen in the fall!

Okay, with the transportation question, there are lots of options (this is a common issue). If you want to fly out of Easterwood airport, you can take a taxi (Maroon Cab is really good) for about $15-20. There should also be a shuttle from the airport to the university, if you're arriving/leaving during the day. (I think it's free.)
There are also ground shuttles to Houston; these aren't free, but might save you some money. (Others have written about this, so I'm not going to elaborate.)

I STRONGLY recommend moving in at least four or five days before classes start. I was not prepared for how stressful it is to be in a new place, adjusting to adult life, and getting used to the new problems and opportunities and people. I was really glad for a few days to just get my bearings before I had to worry about classes.

Welcome to Texas A&M! Let me know if you have any other questions!
