yo people, im hoping to get into UCLA as a history major (UCLA is my #1 choice), gonna apply to UCs this coming november(2008)......i am a US Citizen, California Resident at a CCC

i am currently at Pasadena City College, in pasadena.........

wondering if ud all let me know where i am at right now and if i have a shot at getting in.....

GPA: about 3.75-3.8 rite now (hopefully ill pull that up)
IGETC: finish by end of fall08
TAP:finish by end of spring09

HISTORY MAJOR

ECs: 1) part of this program that tutors poor children for free (i specialize in History/Social Studies)
2) certified Advanced Diver for NAUI (consider this my passion away from history
3) Eagle Scout
4) volunteered at Long Beach Aquarium

Essays: most-likely AWESOME

any pointers, thatll be great, thanks!!

Really you don't need any pointers as you are already on the right track. As long as you keep that GPA up and complete your history prerequisites and also TAP you should have no problem getting into UCLA. If you want to just throw some icing on the cake you should get a EC that is more involved in the field of history. But really you probably don't need it.

hm... just wondering but what would be an EC that is more involved with the field of history????

Join your local historical society, get a leadership position in your school history club (start a school history club). Get and internship at a museum, work with historical preservation groups, etc. Just be creative of how you can get involved in the field of history. But this is just suggestions really you are still a good candidate without this stuff and it is really just icing on the cake for you if you want to go to UCLA. If you want to attend Berkeley than I would suggest getting involved in clubs and get history ECs, and leadership positions.

thanks alot

any other suggestions, people??

Do the scholars program at PCC and join AGS.

just wondering but how much does completion of TAP help u??

statistically, nearly all the Community Colleges that offer the TAP program have an acceptance of at LEAST 90% for those who complete the program. You can Google these statistics.

In my opinion i would focus mostly on your tutoring. I am a history major and my EC was tutoring at both a homeless shelter and my ccc. we're kind of limited in our major so i chose to tutor, it demonstrates that you are well versed in the material and have to ability to communicate/lead because tutoring takes a lot of dedication.

post script: it's nice to see another history major b/c it seems everyone on here is econ/biz/math

post post script: Finish as many prerequisites as possible early on and keep up your gpa.

just wondering but how does the TAP situation work for me?? ill be finished with TAP when i take 2 courses for SPRING 2009..... do i report that im still working on TAP and ill finish it by end of the Spring semester??

same goes for my IGETC...

bumppp.......

krnnoodles you need to talk to your TAP coordinator. I'm finishing up my tap coursework (though am not at PCC) and had to get special permission to be certified without being finished.

yeah, +1 to kal7

I took 15 units of TAP related courses last quarter, and I'm finishing up 6 more units JUST for TAP this quarter. I had to get OOBER special permission, and LA told foothill that this is the last time they'll ever allow TAP certification for someone who starts all their TAP coursework in the Winter quarter like that.

To top it off, the only reason LA let it fly is because my Honors coordinator told me everything was fine roughly 2 hours before LA wanted to cut the chord. (now do you see why I have a reason to worry about LA?). It's been intensely stressful--I've had to submit several mid-quarter progress reports and such, at the request of UCLA. I'd assume you'd have to do the same.

Moral of the story:

Git R DUN!
