I was recently looking at my school's Naviance data and while I certainly wouldn't consider NYU a safety, I have a very good shot (at least statistically) of getting in.

However, my prospective major would be philosophy, which I now is something of a specialty at CAS. Does the fact that NYU's philosophy program is ranked #1 in the country make admissions for prospective philosophy majors exponentially more competitive than for other majors within CAS?

NYU’s graduate philosophy program is ranked number one - there aren’t really any rankings for undergraduate philosophy, although there are a handful of schools with very well known undergrad programs. When looking at a school’s program, look at the faculty and see where they did their graduate work. A lot of the top liberal arts colleges have great programs from what I’ve heard (Williams, Amherst, Reed, Wesleyan).

I’m pretty sure getting into CAS as a philosophy major would be the same as getting in as any other major.
