Prospective Major

Hi so I was wondering if most schools care what major you put down when you apply
Like people say it doesn’t really matter because they don’t admit by program but doesn’t it matter in that they look at what major you are applying as and if it matches what you’ve been doing throughout high school?

So like i am submitting an art portfoli writing an essay related to creativity and art and stuff and basically am more humanities and arts leaning

But i got a b in ap lang last and im probably gonna have a b in ap lit so if i applied to be an english major would they think that is weird? my first choice is usually as an art history major

Also I kind of like sociology but I’m taking the class for that and its a reg class

Basically does it matter and what major do you guys think it would make sense for me to apply as? Thank you !!! if you help me i’ll be super grateful

It completely depends on the college to which you are applying. Some schools the major you choose is completely irrelevant, while others may have very selective programs and non-selective.

The schools are brown Amherst vassar Hamilton and u or Rochester but I’m not really worried about u of r

And none of them have programs specifically but like if I write about being creative and stuff don’t they wanna see me major in something like that not in psych or sociology idk

The correlation between what people think they are going to major in and what they actually major in is not great. Students often discover subjects that they didn’t know about, or discover that college level is completely different than high school and they like or loath the subject differently than they expected.

The only reason to put down a possible major is if you have a strong interest in it- and the main reason for that is so that if you want to take a class that is oversubscribed they will often allocate the spaces to prospective majors first.
