Prospective OU National Scholar?

Mostly I'm posting this just so that there is some activity as the class of '13 starts researching in earnest. My son is class of '12 and has just accepted the National Scholar package from OU. He's taking a gap year, so my knowledge at this point is limited, but I'm happy to try to answer any questions I can from our research and visit.

As his enrollment probably makes clear, we though OU was a great choice. We are not from OK or TX, but there is growing diversity in the honors college. Schedule a visit, and I think you'll be as pleasantly surprised as we were. Those stereotypes about "flyover country" die hard!

Hi momof2,

My youngest d is headed to OU on NM as well. We live in OK now, so it seemed a good fit. We also were impressed with the visit to campus. The tour guide was great and the campus was gorgeous.

Did you have any issues with the gap year in regards to the NM scholarship? The site NM team seem pretty accommodating.

We visited in March, 2012 and were impressed too. My daughter is a junior so we have a lot of time, but if I were forced to make a decision for her today I would pick OU. Not sure though what she would pick!

The presentation about the Honors college was very well done with a small and informal group setting. The main cafeteria was amazing with multiple international food stations. The NMF kids can choose a dorm floor that is all NMFs if they want that.

Overall, I think they are making a great offer.

Anyone know anything about the pre med program, medical school, acceptance rates, etc?

We visited in March as well. My D liked the campus but it was the honors program that really drew her in. It is popular schools for graduates from her HS and several NMF this year and in the past have headed there so we have gotten some insights on the program from them.

As a junior she still has some time and we expect to visit again this summer for a follow up as she narows her search. It would be great to get a little more activity in this forum!

MaterMia, can I sugest that you start a new thread titled Oklahoma Pre-med? You may get some hits from those with specific knowledge.

Matermia, my d is planning on the premed/med school route. We live in OK so, it is the main school for physicians. There is also an osteopathic med school at Ok.State U.

Like many other state medical schools,I think the OU Medical Center accepts mostly in-state applicants, so for an OK student, going to OU for premed is one of the main paths to being an MD. I think the pre-med program is a good one. I know one of our friends had their son in the program and when he graduated from OU, he was very exited to be accepted to the University of San Francisco med school. I believe there are a good many that go to Texas med schools as well, since a there are a good many TX residents at OU.

You should also know that thru the honors school, there is a program for Medical Humanities, where if you are accepted you are guaranteed med school admission at OU med center upon graduation. You do have to keep up a minimum grade point average during your undergraduate work for that.

OU and the University of Tulsa have announced they are jointly forming a new state med school for the humanities in Tulsa that will be operating when our kids are graduated. I would think that the OU Medical Humanities would be an automatic acceptance there as well. Tulsa is strong academically, so I would think this school would be excellent.

Also if your young person is a National Merit Scholar, there is an added bonus for OU med school. Since they pay the tuition for five years, including post graduate tuition at an OU facility, then the first year of med school tuition would be covered.

So I would suggest a visit. They can set you up so you can talk to Med people as well as a regular tour of the OU campus.

Sorry,I hadn’t kept up with this thread. The gap year is seamless so far, they’ve changed him to enter 2013 but also sent the nmsc package. He’s a humanities geek, so I can’t speak to the rest of the questions.

Any thoughts now that you have been there for awhile?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. @Torveaux by chance did you apply to the Medical Humanities program?

Not me…S1. He is going for ChemE. No interest at all in even Biomedical Eng.

Scanning this thread I see I posted 5/12 regarding D1 who ended up at Baylor. We are now knee deep in the selection process for D2 who is currently a junior, low bubble score for NMF, and set on OU for Engineering.
NM office was very gracious and extended their services for scheduling her visit last summer and the folks in the engineering program were fantastic, answering her questions and making her feel welcome.
