Prospective pre med student help?!!

Hi, i am a high school senior that wants to go to medical school. I want to attend my local community college for 2 years to get my general requirements, and then start my pre med courses my junior year at a 4 year university. Is this a bad idea?. Will i be able prepared to start taking the MCAT my junior year? Will i be able to go to med school right after college? I would really appreciate some feedback, i want to make sure i am on the right track to going to med school. Thank you!!

You certainly can start at a CC and transfer to a 4 year college and still go to medical school. You can take your freshman writing, calc 1 plus a second “college level” math class, and general physics at the CC. Probably even your general chem. (Make sure you take the required labs with your science classes.) Plus a variety of general education classes.

Unless you plan on majoring in bio at your 4 year college, don’t take your general biology courses at the CC. And definitely save OChem for the 4 year school.

Once you have most of Bio and OChem done in your junior year, you can start prepping for the MCAT and take it in the spring of your junior year. This will put on track to apply to medical school during your senior year–and hopefully get accepted to start the fall after graduation.

One caveat – a new revised MCAT will be administered starting in 2015. The new version will include more science material (biochem, genetics, statistics, cellular bio) and will add a social sciences section. Because of the new MCAT, it’s likely that medical schools are going to change their admission requirements. You need to be aware of this and take responsibility for keeping an eye on these changes–esp the requirements for your state medical school(s). You will also need to keep in close contact with the health professions advisor at your 4 year college to make sure you’re up to date on the new changes and requirements.

Thank you so much!, i really appreciate it
