i got invited to be a member of the phi theta kappa at my ccc. i looked back through some of the topics on collegeboard and saw some disagreements about whether ptk is a plus or not.

basically, it's the first year that ptk has been available on my campus. if i join, i have a pretty good chance of getting an important position like prez or something.

my main question is this: my top choice is USC thornton school of music (music industry major). would ptk on my transcripts help?

my second question is this: my 2nd choice of school's is uc berkeley's haas school of business. would ptk on my transcripts help there?

thanks you guys!!!

ps. if it matters: i'm on student council and have lots of music performances (at school recitals and at my job as lounge pianist at a restaurant) and have -currently- a 4.0 gpa.

Yes, it is a solid organization and is highly reputable. They offer scholarships for transfer students at many schools throughout the United States. This alone is a great reason to join, of course, depending on which school you transfer to. Also an officer position in PTK is what adcoms like to see. Rather than: say, general, or generic, membership.

In 2007, (long before 2008's Forbes magazine is released, which is likely next month), Mexico's Carlos Slim Helu will be the richest person in the world, surpassing both Bill Gates, 51, and Warren Buffett, 76. Carlos is also the second most corrupt person in the world, behind only George DUBYA of the United States.

I know this seems like a dumb question, but only students two year colleges or schools can apply for PTK right? You can't apply if you go to a four year university?

But seriously, it has good scholarship opportunities but you must be an active member and get a great rec from your PTK advisor in most cases. You don't just get into PTK and get an auto-scholarship, to my knowledge.

Damn Brand you're from Texas so you guys should have good PTK program. I remember last year at international conference most of the awards were swept by Texas chapters of PTK

You do not have to be active, you will get specific invitations for essay competition events etc you can participate in instead of or in addition to club activities.

You must be a student from a two-year university to gain membership.

There are very few schools that have PTK scholarships available to students transferring to US News top 50 schools.

I have had various officer positions in PTK. Furthermore many schools do not require officer positions to get scholarships, but, however, just as many, if not more, do require them. Student Government is the way to go, as far as I am concerned, or both, as I have done. Many of the schools I plan to transfer to do not offer PTK scholarships, so I suppose it really does not matter in the end.

Personally I am not applying for any PTk scholarships.

Brand, and for Texas,

Many universities, in fact, only offer about five competitive scholarships to incoming transfers, Texas State University, but others give them out to everyone, Baylor University, and some give them out to no incoming transfers, UT at Austin. I believe WUSTL and Cornell are the only universities in US News top 30 rankings to offer PTK schoalrships for transfers. I can be wrong. Those are the only two that I am aware of.

Me and my roommate joined after being told it's just aaaaawesome for international students. It ended up just being a bunch of wasted money. Scholarships are NOT that forthcoming.
