Prospective SEAS student. please help.

I posted this before and thought it would be good to put it in the columbia forum since i want some info about fu SEAS. i would like to major in biomedical engineering, eventhough i have never taken a class in it lol. i just like some of the articles i've read from the topic.

GPA: 3.78 unweighted, no rank
SAT: highest 2200 (710M, 740CR, 750W)
*happy with all my scores except math; already taken it twice, should i take it again? My GC advises me to do so.
SAT II: 740 Physics, 750 Bio-M, 710 U.S., 650 Chem. (again in fall), Math IIC in fall
AP: 3 Euro, 5 U.S., 5 Physics; Next year: calc bc, chem ap, stat ap, span ap, econ ap, gov ap, eng ap

EC:
Managing editor of school paper that wins lots of awards in New York + old entertainment editor; 6 years trumpet, playing lead next year for jazz, symphonic band, and symphonic orchestra. 4 times nyssma festival; 208 hours of research at chemical engineering lab - plan to enter intel, siemens, isef; took bio and precalc over the summer at some colleges; volunteered at hospital one summer

Mathletes-want to take amc 12 and hopefully qualift for aime and such

So if i take IIc and do well and pull up my sats, do i have a shot at fu? thanks.

I would say that you have a pretty good chance at SEAS already, because Columbia (moreso than the other Ivies) seems to look beyond SAT scores. Nailing that perfect score in math will just be icing on the cake. I got accepted into the SEAS Class of 2009 as a CP Davis Scholar, and the SATII scores I sent were an 800 in Math Level II, a 690 in Chemistry, and a 620 in Writing!

haha..that's great. so what do they really look for? demonstrated interest i suppose?

I think you're right. Because SEAS is a different school than Columbia College, they put a big emphasis on how you show that engineering is really what you want to do. Just make sure to write a specific "Why Columbia?" answer, as well as a thought-provoking "Why engineering?" answer, on your application. Because all SEAS students must take numerous Core classes as well (most of which deal with humanities), SEAS also tries to admit those who they feel are well-rounded and able to write effectively. Your essay, as well as your list of extracurricular activities, should cover that aspect quite well (especially considering the leadership positions you have taken).

I don't think you even need to pull up your SATs. They're in the range that Columbia looks for, and you need to figure out why exactly you want Biomed so that you sound convincing to Admissions.

Actually, come to think of it, I say don't listen to your Guidance Counselor. Taking the SATs three times is a bit overkill. And your resume is excellent. If you're really set on Columbia, Early Decision, and that's your best bet. I'd be surprised if you were rejected or deferred.

Your Physics SAT II Score is really, really high. If you're good in physics, you're good in math. Let that SAT II Math show for it, and don't about with the SAT I. BE DONE WITH THE SAT I!!

haha thanks for the advice guys

bump..any other advice.. i just want some opinions before i really start working hard on my apps
