Prospective Student chances and questions

Hey, I recently visited Wooster unexpectantly fell in love. I'm a little worried about my chance at being admitted and have a few other questions. Help from a current student would be amazing but any help is appreciated.

Stats:
White Male, Up-state NY.
Prosepective major in Political Science or Internation Relations with a minor in a foreign language.
Hopefully applying EA.

SAT: 620CR 570W 540M - May retake this January, tell me what you think.
GPA: 3.6 - A's throughout humanities/social scienses, B+/A-'s throughout math courses, B's in sciences (except for an A- in Bio)
Course Load: Most rigorous - Have taken all ACE Classes (similar to AP) and honors classes available.
EC's: (Gov. Focused) Boys' State, Youth in Government, Student Council, Congressional campaign volunteer. Also 2 season athlete (nothing special), Drama club - meaning participation in school musicals, Chamber Singers, Impressionists, Academic All-stars.

A few general questions:
1. Will applying EA help my chance of being admitted?
2. How dominate is the Greek life? Are parties thrown in the dorms or are they mainly through Greek functions? Are Greek parties inclusive or exclusive?
3. College of Wooster is ranked 10th by the U.S. news in LAC undergrad teaching, above the likes of Amherst and Wellesley. What makes the professors at Wooster unique?
4. How is the foreign language department? I understand it is small - does this benefit or weaken the education quality?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Wooster isn’t that hard to get into, you’re a likely admit regardless of EA. Greek life isn’t that big at Wooster, but it’s there if you want it. rest of the questions can’t answer but the
level of instruction is pretty high

Thanks, I’m just concerned because my current SAT scores fall short of their median.
Edit - I forgot to mention in my ECs that I’m a member of NHS.

you have an excellent gpa and Wooster is not particularly selective

greg,

glad to hear that you’re very interested in coming to Wooster now! :)

as far as your statistics go, you will be fine. i would also not worry about retaking your SAT unless you’re obsessed about getting it higher. when i was admitted to COW in April 2008, my ACT score was 24. contrary to popular belief, applying as an EA student does NOT increase your chances of being admitted, as i have spoken with several admissions officers throughout the time i’ve worked as an overnight host this year, and they say it doesn’t make absolutely any difference. it just simply states that if they accept you, you will go there no matter what.

greek life is about in the middle of the path. right now the sororities and frats are finishing up their rushing season, so it’s a little crazy. parties are thrown in the dorms by the Greek “functions” and can run from being inclusive to exclusive, just depends on the organization and if they announce it as being campus-wide, etc. they also do a lot of drinking, and you will always find the grassy area and sidewalks around the greek dorm, Bissman, littered with SOLO cups, beer cans, trash cans kicked over, and things a bit messy on “Woo Wednesdays” (student-nicknamed midweek party night) and after the weekend is over, but it’s not too bad. however, 9/10 when you hear security reports and read the in the paper for excessive drinking, beer pong or “beirut”,etc of the like, are Greek students. not saying it’s always them, but more often than not…so, if you’re a big partier and are interested in pledging a frat, go for it. but i would caution against it.

on the nicer side of Greek life here, they do organize some fairly nice non-drinking related events, such as blood drives, etc. as part of their required community service time. they also occasionally sponsor the cover charges for everyone who goes to the UG friday night dance parties and other small things like that.

i’ve got to go get ready for a meeting @ 3:15, but i will definitely be back to finish answering the last two of your questions as soon as i am able :)

Wooster’s Greek life doesn’t dominate campus. Bissman Hall, where the Greek clubs have housing, is only one dorm. There must be a gazillian housing options, from old-style institutional dorms (Bissman) to super-new residences (Gault Manor). The college also owns program houses around campus (like, houses that families lived in not so long ago), and students can apply to live in those. The fraternities and women’s clubs are not national.

Your stats look good. Only problem would be if Wooster got a lot more selective in the coming year, in part due to that nice USNWR ranking.

And speaking of that – Wooster is able to attract strong teaching professionals because the college values a strong faculty. It’s a plum place to teach. The I.S. program is a big deal. I think it’s a real important part of why the faculty is so strong.

Small department? You’ll love it. Everyone will know you. Plenty of chances to go abroad, for languages, etc.

Thanks everyone. Are the general education requirements tough to meet or is there decent flexibility? Is the I.S. program well respected by grad schools? I’m dreaming of law school right now (yes, only in my dreams) and I’m looking for an institution that grad schools will respect.

Yes to your last question
