Prospective student help!

hi i am almost positive i am applying ED to scripps. i love everything about the school... i am just slightly concerned with the all girls factor of it. is it easy to meet boys? and what is the reputation of the girls at scripps like?

please help!

thank you!

It will be what you make of it. If you are somebody who is outgoing and friendly, willing to spend time on other classes, socialize outside your comfort zone, join 5-C clubs, etc- then you won’t have any trouble meeting guys. If you’re more of a homebody, prefer watching movies and board game nights to going out, stick mostly to Scripps academics and clubs, you’ll still meet guys but far, far fewer.

As for reputation, this is something that has come up recently in one of the other threads, where one stereotype was brought up that Scrippsies are ditzy party-girls, following a kind of sorority stereotype. There is also stereotype that Scrippsies are prudish virgins. A little contradictory (a la the virgin/whore dichotomy). Being a womens college, I’ve of course heard the “there all lesbians” stereotype…
In my experience Scripps women are really very diverse and a lot more complex than the stereotypes (like most populations), and I think most other Claremont students who have gotten to know the Scripps community are aware of this too. Almost everyone I’ve met is very friendly, easy-going, and really passionate about whatever it is they do (whether it is math or mol.bio. or organic gardening or dj-ing at the radio station). I’ve felt like peer-pressure is at a minimum here, and that it’s always possible to find a group of girls who are into doing the same kinds of things you like (whether it’s Salsa, baking, watching Star Trek or beer pong).

thank you so much for that! that was very helpful. i am a very outgoing girl so i dont think any of that will be a problem. what year are you at scripps? and if you dont mind me asking… where you are from?

i REALLY LOVE SCRIPPS THOUGH. i am applying ED and really hope i get in!

My daughter is a sophomore and really finds that Scripps is a wonderful place for her. She enjoys the quiet campus but is very involved with the student theatre group at Pomona that has both men and women from all 5 C’s. I agree with Eternal icicle that between the 5 schools there is so much going on that there really is something for everyone. She tries to take some classes at various schools which has really expanded her social circle. Good luck! Scripps provides an excellent education in a beautiful environment.

Thank you revbon50! Was it easy for your daughter to make friends and if you don’t mind me asking what other schools she was looking at when applying to college?

My DD is a freshman. She is not having any problems meeting people on the other campuses. I am a little surprised as when she went down there, she was thinking more in terms of taking only Scripps classes the first semester and really being full time at Scripps. Now she is eating one meal at Harvey Mudd, another meal at Pitzer, attending a club meeting at Pomona, etc… Much more connected than she expected.

Absolutely loving it. Like you she applied ED - which made for a very Merry Christmas!!!

Another Scripps mom here. I have a sophomore D who was also an ED applicant. She was the athlete/musician in high school, and while she has kept those interests alive she has really surprised me with her intellectual growth during her short time at Scripps. She is part of a 5C club sport and spends a lot of time on the other campuses, but I think that her Scripps friendships are becoming more meaningful to her and I can see that continuing through her years at Scripps and beyond. I had the pleasure of helping her move back to school this Fall and was delighted to see how excited she and her classmates were to be back on campus. There was a real feeling that they were all coming back home. She really feels lucky to be part of such a special place.

kappy77- I’m a Junior from Portland, OR. I’m glad you’re so excited! Hope you have your App done so that you don’t have to worry about it over Halloween! Where are you from?

kappy77-

CMC parent here, but I can tell you that D has commented on Scripps girls often hanging out with the guys across the hall so they are managing to meet somehow! Seriously, from what I have seen and heard, there is as much mixing among the 5Cs as you want and it is also easy to retreat to your own campus as the mood strikes.

Kappy77 - My Daughter also looked at Kenyon College, Mt. Holyoke, Barnard, and Oxy. We are from the Boston area. Once she visited in Nov. of her senior year she came home and decided to apply EDII. She has made so many close friends at Scripps as well as the other schools. Her major is at Pomona so she takes a lot of classes there, but her classes at Scripps have been amazing. She left for college a bright young woman with a passion for theatre. She has grown into a true intellectual with a passion for theatre, french and so much more. When she is home over her breaks, friends from the east coast who attend the 5 C’s all get together. She loves Scripps and is truly happy.

Eternal Icicle I am from Chicago! and yes i already finished my app and it is in! I APPLIED TO SCRIPPS ED and really feel that I made the right choice!! how was halloween at the claremont schools?

Revbon50- I looked at many of the same schools your daughter did as well and am glad to know that she is very happy at Scripps and that she mixes a lot with the other 5 C’s!

Halloween was madness.

Thursday, Scripps had a Halloween Candlelight Dinner and Costume Contest.

Friday there were so many parties-- A dance party at Pitzer, a party at CMC, a Masquerade Ball at Pomona where they taught Viennese Waltz, and my personal favorite, Trick or Drink at Harvey Mudd (a Mudd-Scripps party where each suite serves their own specialty, ranging from gin & tonic jello shots to milk & cookies; an entire event predicated on taking drinks from strangers [Sorry, Parents!!!]) and in the dorm next door they do Trick or Cheese (the same thing, but with cheese!).

Saturday was Harwood Halloween, an annual event held in a parking garage at Pomona. It’s usually the biggest thing happening and was completely packed, and pretty awesome. The DJ this year played a lot of mash-ups which I’m totally down for. Last year, it was Girl Talk.

WOW! that sounds like so much fun!! there is so much going on at the 5’Cs! I really hope i get in!

anyone know how much scripps is into ACT scores?

They don’t get as many ACT’s (which is why you won’t find mean ACT scores in Scripps publications) but as long as you take it with the writing, they’re perfectly fine.

alright thanks! do you know the average accepted ACT score is then? or if you would have to guess…

My DD only submitted her ACT scores and that was fine (e.g. she did not send her SAT scores as they were worse.)

I don’t recall her numbers off hand but a quick google for ACT scores on the Scripps Profile shows 27/32 - 27 is the 25 percentile and 32 is the 75th percentile.

i should comment that now that she is in and I have heard the director of admissions speak a couple of times, I am convinced that scores and GPA are basically a qualifying measure or hurdle. Get a decent score, have a decent GPA - and from there, they really aren’t that important compared to the rest of the application. Scripps really seems to evaluate the entire package and values recommendations and personal essays very highly.

My guess for mean ACT scores would about 30, and the numbers scualum found seem to fit that.

alright thank you all for your help! much appreciated. hopefully I will get in!
