Prospective student: risk vs known entitiy

I have been following the post hurricaneTulane activities and opted not to apply. Since I do not have a vested interest in the school (unlike matriculating students), I believe the financial strain on the university and the uncertainties of a time frame for New Orleans to be rebuilt are risks.

I have no doubt that Tulane will survive and remain a major university in the south. Rankings are only numbers, but I would assume that the US News rankings will be less favorable to Tulane due to peer assessment (losing depts and rentention and recruitment of profs), endowment growth, financial stability, etc…

My guidance counselor advised Tulane for the following reasons:

safety with merit aid

simple free application

perhaps will be re-invented to a top school

Hopefully Tulane will do fine but I just can’t take the risk with the next 4 years of my academic and social life.

Good luck to you all!

Risk assessment is a very individualized process. As anyone who frequents this board know, I am a big supporter of Tulane. But now, more than ever, I would recommend prospective students visit the campus and the city before deciding one way or the other.

Thanks for your input. Although I have not personally visited Tulane, two HS classmates have and claimed that Tulane has quite a ways to go in order to return to pre-hurricane form. They saw positive steps being taken and believe the school will rebound from the disaster. At what cost in the long run? Who knows.

New Orleans is another story.

Too many risks and unknowns for me to apply. If I were a student at Tulane I would probably contuinue.

Hannibal: My wife and son were on campus the latter part of December and said that great progress had been made towards cleaning up the campus. It will be interesting to see, as the Spring term progresses, what the students have to say about life on campus and in new Orleans in general.
