Keeping yourself safe shouldn't be an abstract notion. Use the buddy system, call for an escort and carry a personal alarm. Especially in known areas such as this: "the fourth woman to disappear from the area since 2009 Route 29 has an infamous reputation If you look at the map of missing and abducted along Route 29 -- it's not a normal pattern" http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/23/us/virginia-hannah-graham-missing-what-we-know/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Anybody know if most colleges have a policy against students carrying pepper spray?

The ‘don’ts’ are pretty basic and are common sense things.

Don’t drink to the point of loss of judgment.

Never get into a vehicle with a stranger.

Don’t walk city streets alone at night.

I know at the local flagship, some students get a concealed weapon permit.
Never walking city streets is pretty restrictive.
But I would encourage people to be alert and not playing with their phone or listening to music.

This. Above all, this.

Emerson in Boston prohibits ANY offensive weapon and pepper spray is forbidden. In Boston you need an FID (firearm permit) for pepper spray but I heard this was changing so that women can better protect themselves. Don’t know the status of that. I gave personal alarms to both my son and his girlfriend who are in Boston right now. ( & told them they don’t work if you don’t carry them, what they do is up to them) There are some very nice very small pepper spray items for sale on Amazon but they won’t deliver to MASS. Lot’s of do’s and don’ts unfortunately putting the responsibility on the victim. In that article it mentions an area that maybe should be patrolled better … more lights? more undercover? etc

predators are hunting our daughters even within school buildings
<a href=“Suspect Pleads Not Guilty to Assault, Rape on Campus – NECN”>Suspect Pleads Not Guilty to Assault, Rape on Campus – NECN;

update - there’s been an arrest at Massasoit Community College. As a parent of a Freshman I appear to be hyper-aware of assaults to college students. Let’s hope President Obama’s new push to fight this will help. My Son’s college says they have a new initiative to do so. The money we spend our students deserve a safe place to educate and the colleges should hire more patrols and undercover officers. If the predators know where to hunt, then they should be all that much easier to catch and prevent.
