Protocol Question

I've been hanging around now and I get it that a prospective student should have a sample lesson with a teacher at a given school before deciding on that school, but what I'm not sure of is this: should that lesson take place before the student applies, after the school has offered acceptance, or does it depend on circumstances?

don, some of the earlier threads are here

Some try to arrange a lesson as part of a visit to the school, sometimes arranged at a summer program if feasible, sometimes after a visit if costs, distance not a factor.

A lot depends on the meshing of schedules. Some faculty will do sample lessons after or prior to audition, some won’t (I’m talking day of).

Some choose to do it after acceptance, but this goes against the general wisdom of establishing if a teacher/student is potenially viable.

The best advice is to try and make contact early, as arranging a day/time that works for all is often the most difficult aspect.

My D auditioned at 6 schools and had sample lessons at 5. She did all but one in the fall of her senior year after she had applied. The only one she did after she was accepted was at the school she chose. That school became her first choice late in the process so we had to make a last minute trip for a lesson in April before she accepted in May. She emailed or called each teacher and all were accommodating. It was helpful to do the lesson before the audition as each teacher commented on her rep. She let the teachers know the dates of her auditions and one teacher made arrangements to be on her panel. It was really nice to see a familiar face there. She was also able to sit in on choral rehearsals and other classes on the day of the sample lessons. This was also helpful.

DS had lessons with all teacher prior to applying to both undergrad and grad schools. For undergrad, he actually started that process in 11th grade when making college visits. He made email contact with the teachers and they were most accommodating scheduling lessons. At two schools, he had lessons the day before or day of his audition. At the others, the lessons prior to the application process beginning.

DD decided late on VP and we were not aware of the process in time to do them ahead of time. She did them after acceptance at the top 3 candidate schools. I think doing over I would have done them earlier as it would have changed her list. However, all’s well that ends well, she is were she belongs.

Okay, that’s pretty much the answer I’d hoped for. She can wing it as time, schedules, and geography allow.
