PSA: Declining Other Offers

Hi all!

First, if you have already SIRed, congratulations! You worked really hard for this moment, and I’m really proud of you! Now that you have made your deposit, make sure to decline your other offers to give other students a shot.

Second, if you are deciding between schools, please decline any schools you KNOW you will not attend. This will also give pending or wait-listed students a shot.

It is important to decline in a timely manner to help out your fellow transfer students. Often, things like orientation, housing, or parking can only be accessed after an offer of admission. Make sure your pending/waitlisted compatriots get a fair shot at those by declining your other offers!

Of course, if you are still deciding, take your time! This is a big decision that you do not want to rush. These are suggestions, and not meant to push you or guilt you into declining offers.

Again, congrats all!

I feel like I’m missing something, but I’ve tried logging in to do this multiple times and cannot find the decline button. Any idea where it’s located?

@bbgrms For some, it may be on the same page as those wanting to SIR. That’s how it is for Irvine and Berkeley. You just have to choose either to SIR or decline the offer.
For Davis, it’s on the bottom of the admitted page.
For LA, it’s on the ‘Your Next Steps’ section of your admission.
I’m not too sure about the other schools.

Well said.

@luckie1367 is my favorite person on this site

D’awww @fncrane :x

Thanks @luckie1367 . I completely forgot about my other universities lol! Anyone waiting on UCLA or UCD, hopefully you can take my spot!

Awesome @CaptainCal ! Congrats on UCB by the way!

I thought that I’d bump this now that many schools have had their admit day…

Did visiting help you make a decision? Which schools are you between?

@lindyk8 brought up an excellent point in another thread, which is how does the waitlist work?

My (limited) understanding is that offers are made to people on the waitlist after June 1. At that time, waitlisters have a period of time to accept the new offer (and decline and other SIRs they may have made), and have new deadlines for transcripts/AP scores/IGETC.

Of course, every school is slightly different, so waitlist policies will probably vary.

@luckie1367 I only know about UCLA’s, but for them admission from the waitlist is major specific. That is, if they have space in the major you applied under then you will be considered for admission. They said it’s most likely that they won’t start sending notices until after June 1, and you will have three days to decide. If you are admitted before June 15 then you are still guaranteed housing and orientation ~ any time after that you’ll be placed in the housing lottery. Apparently for other campuses (Irvine and San Diego I think) admission is not major specific but the other stuff generally applies.

Thanks @fncrane ! I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed for you!

@luckie1367 aww thanks! it’s much appreciated :x

I refuse to decline admissions because something in the back of my head tells me what if a freak accident happens and plans change. I still want my options

@g3tb0mbed He/she only said to decline schools you KNOW you will not be attending. But really if you have more than two offers still on the table, the only reason to leave them all open is if you still haven’t decided where you want to go.

@g3tb0mbed same!

It seems like it doesn’t make any difference if you wait because they don’t decide until they have a clear picture of everything, and that will be after the June 1 SIR. That’s why I was wondering if they roll out wait list notices. Otherwise, doing it now or later probably isn’t that important. I would want to keep my options open too, just in case. :wink:

@g3tb0mbed Music is right, this is a mere suggestion. You are free to do as you wish.

Good luck to all the people nervously waiting. The end is near! (In about 3 weeks). :open_mouth:
I am going to say, I feel really bad for you. I don’t know how you can handle the torment. Seriously.

Bumping since people are hearing from UCSD and UCI :open_mouth:
