PSAT '09 Form W Thread

i put not profound as he compared the changes with the other changes and found that they were not as important

also for PSAT study, your school will probably provide one for you (even though the one this year was loads easier than the real test)

it wasnt “to show subtle changes” for tv cuz it said the word “obvious” which is opposite of subtle.

I scored a 197/240 as a freshman. I’m a sophomore now, hoping for something around 220.

what was the question for the subtle changes one?

Here’s my guesstimation:

I missed maybe 5 on the critical reading (terrible, terrible; utterly upset) and skipped one

I missed maybe 2 on the math and skipped none

I missed maybe 1 on the writing and skipped one

Can anyone tell me if I have a chance of qualifying for National Merit in Texas?..

Yeah I steered away from subtle changes because of the “obvious”

I think i put “challenge something”

elainen8 hahah geez you’re smart
i got like 193 freshman year
189 sophomore year

my friends are like geniuses though… 220+ for many ><

I haven’t taken an official PSAT test before but on my Practice PSATs, I scored around 210-219

I don’t remember the question or other answers for the “subtle changes” one…

It was my impression that the passage’s main idea (the first sentence “noted an obstacle”) that many people are so used to the idea of TV that they haven’t realized how much it’s changed their lives since the 1960s. But the Nascar viewing, etc. are examples of changes that people take for granted, or haven’t taken much notice of. So it’s not such a leap to call them “subtle”

That’s what I thought when I answered the question, I could be wrong.

that one was about the TVs. like describe the changes or whatever they brought. or something.

Yeah, I honestly have no idea what I put for the TV question…

blake93… whaaaaat hahahah this time doesn’t even count for you hahah. i feel better knowing that i wasn’t even close to my state’s cut off 221 in my past two years. cause otherwise i would be v. ticked off if i scored crappily this time when it actually counted forreal

oo yes I put subtle changes also I think

@notajingoist
Yeah I was really happy with what I scored because I fared better than most of my so-called genius friends who are in more advanced math than me (that always gave me a bit of an inferiority complex). My happiness will seriously take a tumble if I did worse this year :frowning: and I’m fairly certain that you need around a 217-219 in my state to qualify for Semi-finalist, and I think I’ve missed about 4 or 5 so far so that’s not looking good. Any ideas on how to calculate this? Are the sections weighted differently?

what choice was “subtle changes”; A, B, C, D, or E?

I got a 216 Sophomore year. But my practice test this year was 209, and so far I’ve been doing worse than my practice test. Much worse, since I’ve missed so much CR (usually my best section) I’m predicting a low 200, which doesn’t make NMSF in my state. :(

elainen8 i’d just look at the practice PSAT test booklet and use the conversion scale thing there
curve’s probably gonna be different, but that seems like the best way to measure

Four I still don’t know if i got correct (and my Ntl Merit status sorta depends on them):

  1. the author of passage 2 would see the last two sentences of passage 1 as…insincere or alarmist or what?
  2. the circle with the shaded and unshaded regions…x= 45 or 60?
  3. #23 writing…was dependent or NE?
  4. #33 for writing…“at the center of” or NE?
Oh, and this “explanation of/for” question everyone is talking about…can someone please elaborate? I do not recall where this question at all.
