PSAT '09 Form W Thread

Thanks! Hopefully everyone else ends up doing well.

so in which sections do u think there’ll be the best curve? I rly hope writing

what was the answer to the one where Someone suggested [to build] the Capitol [at the center] of Washington or somethign?

and also for CR Indian one, was the answer to “why the author described the watchmaker’s place as a house” was b/c it was a “place to explore?”

Yes place to explore

when do we get scores? international students have to wait until december
is that true for ppl in the states as well?

and for the answer

with the “comprises lakes, roads
” or something. was it supposed to be “comprises of” or NE? it was NE right?

what about the “explanation of” and “explanation for” writing question?

^I think its NE and explanation for.

Does anyone remember the answers to the watchmaker’s house/place to explore question? I don’t really remember it, and I’m wanting to think I put something that had the word invention or innovation or mechanism
I’m either thinking of a different question or was being really careless :/

for the house it was “place to explore”

Vince when u mean explanation for did you mean that you selected “explanation for” as the answer because it was gramatically incorrect? thankx

I know that the answer is “place to explore”- I was wondering if anyone remembered the other answer choices.

“Explanation of” was underlined; I was saying that it should have been “explanation for”, so yes, I selected it.

explanation of is also grammatically correct
that one’s NE

i know one of the choices was “eerie location”—that’s the one i retardedly picked
idk why i picked that
ugh.

Are you sure about that, fresh101? Context is vital to knowing which idiom is correct, but I’ve forgotten the sentence.

I think the CR and WR were easier than normal whereas the math was slightly harder but thats just my opinion

I think explanation for is grammatically correct (though I ended up putting NE
). When I checked google, “explanation of” is used before something that you can explain (you know how it works, etc), but “explanation for” is used before something that’s puzzling/ a mystery.
so “explanation for a phenomenon” would be correct.

^ I sure hope “explanation of” is wrong. If missed it, I go from two wrong to three. Because I didn’t omit any, that one question effectively bumps my raw school down two points.

silverturtle, what’s the cutoff score for your state? You already said you think you have an 80 math, so three on writing shouldn’t hurt you too badly, should it?

I think that fresh was right when he said that they are both correct, but in the context (Scientists could not provide an explanation of this) “explanation for” would indeed be the better option.

Okay, so for the watchmaker question, we have the choices “place to explore” and “eerie location”- does anyone remember the other answers?

Does anyone remember what he/she put for the sentence in the find error section of grammar that starts with “that”?
I’m mainly unsure of whether the verb tense agreement is correct
The following sentence is one that resembles the sentence on the test (which has escaped my memory):
That Mary drinks came as a surprise to George.
Do you have to change “came” to “comes”, or “drinks” to “drank”, or is it NE?

Vince: I can’t remember the other ones, but I really think that “structure to explore” is the one.

I don’t believe the first verb in that sentence was underlined, so when the underlined second verb (came) was in a different tense, it had to be incorrect.

Oh, I realize that it’s “structure to explore”, but since that answer didn’t immediately ring a bell, I’ve been trying to find out the other choices to see if I missed that one- I’m trying to get a semblance of what my score will be. For some reason I think the answer I chose had the word “innovation” or “mechanism” or something like that.

Illinois’ cutoff is usually around 214 I believe. However, I’m going for the corporate scholarship; I’m not sure what that cutoff is.

Vince,

One of the answer choices was “innovative design.”

Does anyone know if “structure to explore” was Choice A? I don’t precisely remember what I put down for that question about the house
