PSAT 2010 Wednesday Writing Discussion

^Stuff like
On the other hand, as
Although, as

I also put “to become firefighters” it sounded grammatical and good.

^

That was indeed the correct answer. The only other choice I remember is although as.

^ I believe it was E

The answer was “However, as…” because it most logically flowed. The sentence right before that said that the gorillas didn’t originally value the chips, and the sentence that needed to be corrected said something like they came to value the chips.

Didn’t it say something about “each of them” deciding? Wouldn’t it have to be “become a firefighter”, then, since the subject was single?

Hmm, maybe the answer was “However, as…”. Does anyone remember the rest of that sentence? I believe it was talking about the chimps and the metal slugs or something.

Didn’t it say something about “each of them” deciding? Wouldn’t it have to be “become a firefighter”, then, since the subject was single?

Yes, it did say “each of them.” I also put “become a firefighter” because the subject was singular.

^

Yes, you are right. That was the correct answer.

I agree with purplepotato for the firefighters question. It definitely said “each”.

Yeah, I got ‘However, as.’ Also ‘each’ refers to one person so it has to be singular. And I think the sentence with ‘insured’ already used the past perfect.

Is lolling because people in every thread are arguing about the same questions and keep asserting that Answer X is the answer, while another group argues Answer Y is the answer shortly afterwards.

Error IDs

39. Using the vending machine is like using tools - like when they use sticks to get ants (something like this. very last question)

Improving Sentences

20 = A, the answer that started with “were”

Same here purplepotato, I put singular… I’m sure it said, “each of those”, but I still don’t know if that’s supposed to be singular or purple. EDIT: Going with the majority here, the answer was singular? Yay.

Not sure if this was discussed already but there was another question in the chimpanzee essay where you had to add in a transitional phrase. The question was talking about slugs not fitting inside the machine. Was it, “The slugs, it turned out,…”?

It said each of those…so would those, being plural, cancel out the singularity? I don’t know, haha. And yes, the one that was about chimpanzees and chips and brass slugs, it was However, as the chimpanzees started using the brass slugs, they realized the vending machine wouldn’t function with the slugs, so they went back to the poker chips (or something like that)

^Yeah, I put it turned out.

^^ that’s what I put.

No; “each of them” is a noun phrase acting as the subject, but “of them” is a prepositional phrase describing “each”, so it doesn’t cancel out the singularity of “each”.

That was what I put, feedback. Was that the same question as the “However, as…” one?

Yeah, because of the “each” it was definitely singular.

^ Nope, that was a different question. I got both, “However, as…” and “it turned out” for the two questions.
