I’m a junior who will be taking the PSAT this month.
I am trying to score within the top 5% of test takers to receive commendation/recognition ONLY, but I could not find the most recent cutoff score to make the top 5%.
Could someone please give me a solid number (what I would need to score to get recognition)?
BTW I AM NOT trying to make the semifinalist cut, for I live in NJ, in which the score for this is absurdly high (225-ish)
I would around 1320/1330…that’s equivalent to about a 208/210 for last years PSAT. Once you hit the 1300’s you should be fine… anything above that is exceptional (:
To determine national merit, they are going to double the reading and writing score and add it to the math score. This is called the selection index and it will be out of 2280.
So if 2280 is 95% of 2400, then the cutoff will probably be around 95% of what the cutoff was last year. The comment above me said it was 202 so this year it would probably be around 192. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
And nobody can give you a definite number since nobody knows yet.
@Alex99 Lol yea I feel you. I live here in Maryland and am hoping to get commended. Here in Maryland, the cutoff is I believe 1 point or 2 points less than the cutoff in New Jersey, so it’s still hard. I think to get commended you have to get a selection index of about 190/228, and the selection index is calculated in this way:
take Math score and divide it by 20 and take the verbal score and divide it by 10 and then add the two results and multiply the sum by 2 to get your selection index.
So here’s an example: You get say 700 M 600 V
Selection index: 700/20 = 35 600/10 = 60 2(60 + 35) = 2(95) = 190/228 which I believe should be good enough.
