Any idea of PSAT commended level for the 2009 exam (2011 Graduation)?

199-201 depends every year.

^ When are the letters mailed out… I mean it’s Spring already.

I think they’re mailed out in senior fall (Sept or Oct?)

those are Semi-finalist. Commended is sometime in the spring

Oh really?! I wasn’t expecting that.

Well basically if your PSAT score is over 201 and you don’t get a letter in the Spring you already know you are semi-finalist at least. The official letters though for semi come in the fall that you said.

^So they don’t send you commended if you are a semifinalist? I’m right on last years cutoff

I got a 200. If the cut off is 201 again this year I will be very unhappy.

^^ Yeah, if you are a semi-finalist, you dont get a commended letter.

everyone who is at least commended/potential SF, receives a letter in May informing them of their potential to continue in the competition. In Sept you either receive a packet of info to fill out for SF or a letter telling you that you are commended and the competition is over for you.

^Okay gotcha, thanks

From National Merit Scholarship Corp, I was told the letters of recognition will be sent on April 13th. Anybody got it??

This is from the main website:

Program Recognition

Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In April following the fall test administration, high-scoring participants from every state are invited to name two colleges or universities to which they would like to be referred by NMSC. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. back to top

Commended Students

In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. back to top

Semifinalists

In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically able young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. NMSC provides scholarship application materials to Semifinalists through their high schools. To be considered for a National Merit® Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements explained in the materials provided to each Semifinalist. Click here to learn about requirements for becoming a Finalist in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required.) back to top

Finalists

In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified by mail at their home addresses that they have advanced to Finalist standing. High school principals are notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist. back to top

Winner Selection

All winners of Merit Scholarship® awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments–without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate–the Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay. back to top

D received her April letter today asking for top two colleges. Michigan Score 212

Are these letters sent to commended and semifinalists or just semifinalists?

^ Letter says to the top 50,000, I believe that is commended and Semi. The top 16,000 go on to become semi., and approx 15,000 are chosen for finalists.

Alright, thanks

raiderade: According to the College Board chart “Selection Index Percentiles and Mean Score”, Junior who took the 2009 PSAT and scored 201 or higher are around 4,5000( 1,500.000x0.03%). The other 5000 comes from those who scored 200( the higher 1/4 from 96%), in other words, 200 should be enough to make the Commended cutoff, at least that’s what my D hope 'cause that’s what she got.LOL. And I hope you make it too.
