PSAT Commended

HomeSchoolingMom - did your letter say anything about the cut off for this year? In the past, the letter that the student receives doesn’t say anything about the cut off, but the letter that the school receives does state what the cut off was for that year. If you are home schooling your children (or child) you may have a letter that clarifies what this year’s cut off is.
If so, can you let us know?

Ahh 200 PSAT in NY

Son got a 203 in Minnesota and got a letter today.

To clarify, the top 50,000 scorers will receive a letter sometime in April, regardless of status as commended or semifinalist.

In other words, if you don’t get a letter now, you haven’t met the cutoff for either commended OR semifinalist.

Though, if you have received a letter now, there is no way to tell whether you will be a commended student or a semi-finalist until fall 2010. As of now, the only thing to do is select two colleges to send your scores to.

I got my letter today with a score of 203. I’m in PA so I’m guaranteed not to get semi-finalist…cutoff in my state around 214. Hoping for commended though!!

Letter came to school today indicating our son was in the top 50,000 group. We have not received a letter here at home yet.

The letter does NOT indicate the cutoff for this year. I am quite sure this form letter is the same letter the school kids get because it tells D to discuss her educational plans with her counselor and her parents :).

Here is the link to the cutoffs for the last 3 years. (page down) If I am reading this correctly then the kids who just got the letter will be in the class of 2011.

If you GET a letter, and are over at least 202, you are Semi-finalist. I got a letter today , yeah , = ( meaning cuttoff for IL was over 213 this year. GL everyone!

^olleger, are you saying that the cutoff is 202?

Olleger: “If you GET a letter, and are over at least 202, you are Semi-finalist”

This is NOT the way it works. Read above.

Anyone get a letter with a 202? That’s what my D got and we are still waiting. Thanks!

I was merely pointing out that a 202 is most likely 100% commended. A 200 may not cut it this year, so you shouldn’t necessarily be expecting one.

Also, so then why did all my friends who got over 215 in IL (cutoff last year was 214) no get letters hmm? I would like to see if anyone here easily got semi-finalist in their state and got a letter yesterday.

I don’t know what the process was last year regarding letter send-out. Maybe it was true last year that friends who scored above cutoff only received a letter in the fall.

However, this year, regardless of status as semi-finalist/commended, you will get a letter THIS MONTH if you fall in those two groups.

In the case that I sound idiotic, I’d like to point out that I only got a 203. And I know I will definitely not be semi-finalist, only commended.

Sadielou, I’d guess that your daughter would get a letter later this month. 202 seems high enough, good luck!!

Hey, I got a 220 in PA, and still haven’t gotten a letter (cutoff for semi-finalist was 214 the past years).

Should I worry about my NM status, or just wait some more?

Olleger - I cannot tell if you are confused or if I am misreading what you wrote, so I will make this as clear as possible. (I think)

The letter that was received yesterday pretty much guarantees the 50,000 kids who received the letter at least a “commended” status. Only 16,000 of the 50,000 will be named semi finalist and each state has a different cut off. This number will not be known until September. The lowest score we have seen so far on the CC threads is 203, but if it is anything like last years cutoff then 203 will not make the semi finalist cut. It is still a great score and the kids should be proud. (I know the parents are)

If you have received a letter, could you post your score? That way we can start to figure out where the cut off was this year. Probably 200, but it would be nice to get it confirmed.

My D got a 220 in TN–no letter yet

200 in NY and no letter today. Don’t think I made it :(

200 in DE and nothing yet…
Odds are looking slim.

I think letters are just slow. We are in MA, mine got a 233 and no letter yet.
