We’re in Oregon. D got a 215. Her letter was given to her yesterday by her counselor. It was dated 4/13/10. If they are delivered to school, it might depend on how busy the counselor is before they are distributed. Her counselor also happens to be her track coach, so she sees him everyday.

I have no letter yet, but I should be receiving one. Do not worry.

Are they sent to your house or your school?

My son’s was addressed to our home address, but given to him by his GC. (dated 4/13/10)

^Uh oh, someone’s been going through your mail

Eh geographic diversity is lame. In some states, less than a 210 can qualify one for SF.

213 in Missouri. The school received a letter on Friday. We have not received a letter at home.

212 in NY…is this good enough for commended? Haven’t got anything yet.

Also, so then why did all my friends who got over 215 in IL (cutoff last year was 214) no get letters hmm? I would like to see if anyone here easily got semi-finalist in their state and got a letter yesterday.

I got a 228 in CA (cutoff wavers between 216-220), and I happened to get a letter from the principal last Friday. I’m pretty sure they give the letter to everybody in the spring, then give the packets to the semi-finalists in the fall

^212 will definitely be good enough for commended

commended is a national cutoff, not by state

Now that you mention that, my friend got a 208 and he got the same commended form I did. Perhaps the cutoff line is 207 or 208…

It’s lower than that.

In that case does anyone know when the commended letters go out?

They already have.

And for the record, I stand corrected. Perhaps they hadn’t finish distributing them at my school.

The actual commended letters don’t go out until like September right? Along with the semi-finalist things?

do people usually get them at home or at school, though

^I’m not sure…It sounds like maybe both

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation sends all letters to high schools for distribution. Some schools act more quickly than others in processing and distributing the letters to students. If you think you should have received a letter but haven’t, ask your guidance counselor.

No scores or cut-offs are stated in these April letters, which are sent to every student who qualified for commended or semifinalist status and present a generic “congrats, you did well, tell us two schools you’d like us to notify, they will make a specific marketing outreach to you.” Historically, the CC community has figured out the national cut-off score for commended by asking folks who received the April letter to post their score. The lowest posted score to receive the letter = commended qualifying score (last three years 201, 200 and 202). There’s no similar process for figuring out state cut-off scores for semifinalist…all waiting on those numbers will have to hang tight until the September notifications are issued (you can check historical state cut-offs on the CC thread for Oct. 2008 test takers graduating now in 2010).

Check the list below for prior year qualifying scores in your state (taken from the other thread:

^ Sucks to live in Mass/NJ/DC. Funny how there is a 20 point disparity in SF cutoffs between the academically strongest and weakest states.

Thanks for clarifying, TXArtemis
