PSAT Curve

Do the standards for National Merit tend to change a great deal from year to year?

My counselor said that last year the national standard for Commended was 200 and the standard in my state for Semi-Finalist was 220. Is it likely that these standards will change by more than a few points for this year?

My son (in California) got his PSAT scores today. He got a total of 237. He got just one wrong in Critical Reading.

The school got them on Tuesday and distributed them to the kids today.

Where in California? - we haven’t gotten ours yet.

woot! so happy!
80 M
80 CR
76 WR

:::DDDD!!!

the curve was one wrong in math=75
one wrong in writing=76

If some schools have the scores, all the schools have the scores. Ask the counselors, and if they tell you that they will have a meeting to explain the results, tell them you can find the explanation on your own on the CB website (and then go to the meeting, it might still be interesting).

I want to know noooooow.

But I really don’t want to bug my counselor about it…she’s probably extremely busy with college stuff.

Yet, we’re score partners, even by section! I just hope that I can do as well on the SAT this Saturday.

hey, someone who took the saturday test–mind telling me what the answer was for the james forten census question and the mind/stars one, about the purpose of something and we had a debate about psychological needs or something…

and plus for writing, the che guevara one and the “long since lost”?

thanks a lot!

anyone in alabama got their scores yet??

I got a 240, worship me please.

I will not worship you, but congrats, freak.

I got my score today: 221

CR: 66 (I missed 8 questions plus -2)
M: 75 (I put 1981 instead of 1983)
W: 80 =)

I’m almost 100% sure I qualified. The cutoff last year was 217. So even if it rises this year, I still have a chance. I’m happy. (I live in California)

By the way, if you DID NOT have an asterik next to your Selection Index, does that mean you’re in? I was in 99th percentile. I REALLY hope I qualify.

I’m pretty sure the asterisk just means that you’re a sophomore or that there’s some other reason why you’re not eligible for NM.

to van-sant:

The James Forten “massive census” question (is that the one you’re talking about?) answer was E; to illustrate the way that Forten balanced competing interests.

For the mind/stars one, I don’t know which one you’re talking about. Can you specify?

Writing: For the che guevara one, I don’t even know what you’re talking about. The “long since lost” one was E; no error.

If the score is in the 99 percentile, does that almost guarantee the student to be a semi-finalist?

Oh just to give out a bit of info. I saw a 212 in California who had 99%.

I thought 99th percentile didn’t matter unless you beat/equaled the state cutoff? I’m confused…

Yeah, the 99th percentile is national I think…I know I scored 99th last year but I was below my state’s cutoff.

I want my scores. lol.

Most National Merit semifinalists will be in the top half of the top national percentile (exactly where that line is isn’t reported). In a few states, the National Merit semifinalist cutoff score for that state is little higher than the nationwide Commended Student score.

Oh man, i’m getting my results back on monday… hoping for NMS, which is 217+…

thanks freakchild–and che guevara had somethign do with grape workers? the sentence was like “many of them mexican americans…”

and the stars/ brain one-- there was a question about what purpose did a certain sentence serve and what two ideas did it link? know im not being clear, but thats all i can remember…

did anyone get their scores via email yet?
