Hello...has anyone heard the California State cutoff for National Merit semi-finalists yet? Rumor has it at 210 this year?

so these are the supposed 2006 cutoffs? i was praying that CT didnt go to 221, which it looks like it didn't = ) crosses fingers

we are interested in hearing the results of this year's semifinal round asap as my son is applying early action to Stanford. At 231 he is bound to be in the semifinal round...but has several friends right around last year's California cutoff at 217 so would like to hear if anyone has seen this year's cutoffs. We heard the high schools have been notified.

The scores pasted into this thread are from last year (the 2006 Program).

See http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74297
for what people have posted so far about this year (the 2007 Program).

So far, TX and AL didn't go up, MO did. The only other indication so far is that the Commended cutoff was up one point from last year, which some people think implies that the Semifinalist cutoff will also go up one.

The press release is Wednesday 9/13/06.

My school called the NMSF students into the office today.... I made it!

Nice, what was your score and where do you live?

I'm from Alabama and got a 213. It appears that the person who posted above me and said the cutoff for Alabama was 212 is correct, because I asked my counselor and she said the same thing.

It's a huge relief...I was so close to last year's cutoff... I was dreading a 2 point increase.

i live in AZ and got a 213.... last year's was 212. Let's hope for a 1 point increase or none at all..... crosses fingers

Good luck, our son is a National Merit Scholar...actually got a $2500 scholarship this past year...but more importantly was offered a complete ride at Univ of AZ..which I am sure you will be interested in.
Both ASU and U of A offer $20,000 or so per year... make sure you apply to both!
Our son stayed in CA and will attend USC this fall... with a big National Merit/ Presidential scholarship.

Any possibility of the NY one going down just a little? That would be lovely.

NJ was 223 last year. (class of 2007)

The commended score this year is, I believe, two to three points lower than last year. So this year's Semifinalist score shall be either the same or lower than last year for most states.

I just checked some of the older thread and found last year's commended was 203 compare to this year's 200. This shall be good news for students whose PSAT score is at or above last year's semifinalist score. In fact in many states, the score might be 3 or more points lower than last year.

omg yes! when do we find out about semifinalist-ness?

Most likely sometime in September.

lemme get this straight...last year Semi cutoff in, lets say NY, was 218? and this year's is supposed to be lower?

There is no guarantee. But since the commended score is 3 points lower due to the way the writing section was scored (not becasue the kids are weaker students), chances are the semi cutoff for most states, at least, will be lower as well.

wow a 204 for mississippi. thats nice

sigh Of course maryland would be tied for the highest cutoff…

California…

Beating myself up for 214…no doubt all my friends were in the 220’s. Only good news is my sister (who’s a junior while I am a lowly sophomore) scored 200 (HA!) so I’m in the clear while my parents duke it out with her.
