**PSAT Discussion Thread 2015**

@ayraify My daughter is taking the new SAT and got her 3 Subject Tests done last autumn. She is naturally very smart and a good test taker. I thought that would give her an advantage on the New SAT, compared to the many kids/parents who have tried to game the system on the old SAT.

“compared to the many kids/parents who have tried to game the system on the old SAT”

The kids including mine who took the old SAT are NOT gaming the system. Quite frankly college board has screwed the 2017 kids. Starting with the mess up with the June test. My son and many others want to get their testing DONE before senior year. The only way to make sure to do that , besides taking the ACT which he also has already done and take all the subject tests he wants before then is to take the old test. Any 2017 kids who wait for the new test are taking a risk. Mostly because college board is messed up and the scores for March will not be released until after the second test in May is done. That means that if they want to take it a second time they only have June to do it. Unless of course they want to count on college board having it together and they want to take it in Sept or later and hope that the scores get there in time for any EA or ED applications.

@ FutureMMAChamp OK GG JUST CALLED. SHE NOW HAS ACCESS . WE HAVE SCOES BUT IT IS VERY LIMITED. SHE CAN ONLY SEE SCORESBUT IT GIVES NO NMSF INDEX NOR ANY PERCENTILE.
.

@gasenioryear Ok nice to know lol. My counselor won’t be back until noon; I’ll pester her then ._.

so do counselors have them or not?

You can figure the index score if you have the scores. Divide the math score by 20 and the verbal by ten. Add them together and double for the index.

I want to second @MichiganGeorgia 's post in response to @londondad. No one was trying to game the system by taking the old SAT this fall. I had my older son take the SAT in the fall because of his time-intensive winter sport that would have made the Jan & March tests impossible. I would not have wanted him to start testing May of Jr year, and I would not want my 2017 son to start March of this year for all the reasons @MichiganGeorgia listed.

Let us also remember the June 2015 five minute SAT snafu that caused many of this year’s seniors to have to sit for the SAT in Oct of their Sr year, a date they may have reserved for subject tests. Layer on top of that SAT and ACT’s failure in rush reporting scores for ED deadlines this fall. Taking the old SAT makes a lot of sense for anyone who wishes to avoid last minute panic.

Now, having said all that, when my son saw his PSAT scores during the glitch yesterday, his only comment was that perhaps he should not have bothered with the old SAT and just taken the easier new SAT.

Maybe you all should leave the GC’s and the college board staff alone so they can get their jobs done.

GC’s are still dealing with senior applications. How will you feel next year when you are trying to sort out a last minute application snafu and your GC says, sorry, I wasn’t able to get to that, I was being pestered all day by younger students who simply couldn’t wait another 24 hours to learn their scores. In prior years, our counselors didn’t have time to look at the scores until late January.

It’s clear the college board is having issues as well, and having thousands of people call them demanding to know whether the scores will be released tomorrow when they’ve said the scores will be released tomorrow and they are obviously trying to get this job done correctly also cannot be helpful.

thanks @ sammieB. YES they have access now @nillupa. CB told me they wouldn’t but my GC did. Don’t know if this is a testing window like on some kids accounts yesterday and it will go away, but 30 minutes ago she did have access to all her students scores.

@SammieB
“You can figure the index score if you have the scores. Divide the math score by 20 and the verbal by ten. Add them together and double for the index.”

That is very helpful. I realize I should know this, but is the index score now out of some # lower than 240 or am I confusing terms?

Are they being released at 7am tomorrow or at midnight?

So I got lucky during the 20 minute window and was able to view my DS’s scores.

223 selection index. 0 wrong on Reading. 0 Wrong on Writing. 8 wrong on math. 760 + 710(math) = 1470.

38, 38, 35.5 for the selection index section scores.

Live in Texas. So I think he’s achieved NMSF with these scores.

These scores align with the type of results we were getting in practice tests. Except that he was only missing 3-4 on math and 0 on reading/writing sections. He said the math test was different than the prep work and threw him off. He would have adjusted his pace if he could have predicted the difference in the math section.

@mathyone it almost sounds like you are having quite an attitude against us all. Maybe we are calling because last time when they said December they changed it. Maybe we are calling to help decide whether to spend more money with them on last old SAT to be administered in January because we still don’t know how we are faring on new psat. Maybe we are calling because our school was picked for a new SAT field test in December, our kids took the test and were told the scores would show up as part of the March group, and then 8 days ago we received an email with admissions ticket for March test. I called and they said to show up again… so will he have two March test scores. Does not make sense. They got a supervisor on the line who actually told me that maybe they were going to average the two scores. I don’t think so! So they put in an inquiry and I was to receive a response in 48 hours. Eight days later… today… no response. So i called to ask about this and psat. They still cannot tell me if I am supposed to show up in March or not… if I do I may have two scores and invalidate the last test. If i don’t I may be wiped from March system. They sent it up for inquiry.
Point of this is stop being judgmental of us… CB has caused the confusion not us. Why are you even on this particular discussion group if you have such disdain for us trying to get our scores. It seems you should get off this board and wait til tomorrow since that seems to be your advice.

@mghyps , Congratulations! Btw, did your DS get the TASP email?

@CT1417 This year the highest index is 228, not 240. I think the different scale and the apparent ease of the test will make it extremely difficult to predict the state cutoffs. Going to be a long wait…

You have an issue with them different from the PSAT. And maybe they would be able to help you out with that if their phones were not ringing off the hooks with people asking, are we really going to get our scores tomorrow? I’m not defending their delay but at present there is no confusion about the latest info. They said you will get your scores tomorrow. It is perfectly clear. Where is the confusion?

Go ahead and annoy your GC. It does leave an impression.

Doesn’t prep scholar at least have predicted national merit cut offs for each state? That shoud take away some of the uncertainty about what is a good score for you individually.

Those predictions just subtracted 12 from the current cut-offs because the ceiling is now lower. They ignored any issues about whether the test is easier, although I don’t think they are in a position to address that.

Guys. When do scores come out tomorrow? Midnight???

@mghyps Yes, did your junior receive the TASP email and did he take the PSAT as a sophomore?
