PSAT help-moved to specific

Sorry I posted in the wrong forums, I think this should be the correct one (I couldn't delete the old threads, is there a way how?)

Help me, I'm so confused x__x

The literary technique used by Gabriel Garcia [Marquez, like some other Latin American writers, are] described as magic realism.

C) Marquez, like some other Latin American writers, is

E) Marquez and some other Latin American writers is

Why is E correct? Doesn't it change the original meaning of the question? In the original, Marquez is the main subject, being compared to other writers. In E, marquez is still the main subject, but is taken as a whole with the writers.

Some people believe that spending solitary, quiet hours reading and thinking in a library [is/are] the best way to prepare for a debate tournament.

Which is correct and why?

I can tell you that C is incorrect because it is grouping the literary technique of Gabriel Garcia Marquez with Latin American writers.

I believe “is” is the correct choice.
“Spending solitary” is the noun “is” is referring to.

It doesn’t change the meaning because the original sentence isn’t trying to compare Marquez to other writers; it’s trying to add the other writers to the subject, which choice E does.

Is. Spending is singular, so the verb is singular. And it also gives it away with the part where it says ‘the best way’. Would the sentence: " Spending spending solitary, quiet hours reading and thinking in a library are the best way to prepare for a debate tournament." make any sense
