PSAT in Ohio

I got a 214 and 98th percentile. Does this mean that because I'm not in the 99th percentile I'm not going to be a semifinalist or could I be 98th percentile in the country but still get it for Ohio? Last years cutoff was 214!

I looked on the official site and it has 2 examples - one with a 207 and an asterisk and it says this person doesn't qualify for NMS programs and the other one without an asterisk and it says this person qualifies. I have the 214 and no asterisk. Does it mean I may qualify?

amazon, it means that you meet the basic requirements to enter (you're a junior, a citizen of the US, etc) but it doesn't guarantee that you got NMSF. The cutoffs are only decided later (I think in March) and announced in August. There's no way to know for sure if you got NMSF/commended till then but we can guess based on past cutoffs and all. 214 is definitely commended but I am not sure about NMSF since the cutoff could rise (or fall) a point or two.

Probably not

It was 216 in OH last year and 215 the year before. I had a 211 last year and was also in the 98th percentile which does not bode well for you. The farming communities lower results slightly, but the Big 3 (Cincy, Col, and Cle) raise the score significantly.

You never know. In reality, it means very little except for money from state schools. If you wanted to go to OSU, I am sorry.

Someone posted in CC that it was 214 last year and 212 the year before. I thought it would be prestigious for college admission to be a semifinalist. How much money do you get from state schools?

For OSU you get Full tuition plus 4500.

so you probably pay like 5000-6000 a year at the most. Im not sure about 2 years ago (I know it was either 214 or 215), but it was 216 last year.

I had a friend get a 215 and he was commended. Remember, for the ivys and such your SAT is much more valuable than the PSAT. But again the SAT isnt everything.

PSAT (Ohio):

[Cutoff / # of semi-finalists / # commended]

2004: 212 / 723 / 1233

2005: 214 / 675 / 1303

2006: 215 / 684 / 1386

I would guess that the next cutoff will be 216 or 217 for Ohio.

my, bad I guess it was 215 last year

My friend must of had a 214 (I know he missed it by a point)

It looks like you're 214 will be close.

Well so far I've heard 214 (somewhere in CC), 216 and now 215. Everyone I know thinks last year's test was easier than this years (although i thought this year's was easier). So maybe it will go down. OSU has a program where you're automatically admitted to their accelerated pre-med/med program if you're a finalist. I don't even think I want pre-med but it sounds like a good deal.

Where did you get your numbers? And does anyone know the 2006 number?

amazon:

Various sites on CC and links that are now deactivated. I was lucky to print the page from the one link before NM insisted that it was copyrighted material and that it had to be pulled. I'm confident on these numbers.

PS: No one will really know anything more until late August/early Sept. for the Class of 2007.

KenJ'sMom: My guidance counselor in Ohio and the NMSQT (I called them) said that last year's cutoff for the test taken in 2004 was 215 in Ohio. I guess those people were awarded in 2005. Is that what you mean by 2005? What is 2006 if not this year's? I'm sorry, I'm just confused and this is pretty important to me.

The 2006 cut-off refers to the Class of 2006. The next cut-off for the Class of 2007 will not be known until Sept. of this year.

Count on anywhere from 215 to 217 being the Ohio cut-off for the Class of 2007. All the cut-offs go up one or two points each year. Commended tends to go up one point.

Although it is difficult, you will have to wait. I posted something on another thread which may be helpful.

Oh I get it. Well it is always possible that it could go down a point too although probably not likely. Thanks.

see thread <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74297%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74297</a><br>
Post #202 there has links to prior years' cutoffs (2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 Programs) and official NMSC. Rest of thread talks about this year's cutoffs. Good luck...

can a 98th percentile score on psat quaify for NMSF? Or is it always the top 1% Does anyone know?

Yes, it can. You can also get a 99 percentile score and not qualify for NMSF. It all depends on your state.
