Do we have to take the PSAT in our junior year?? Or is it just recommended??

I don't know of any college that requires the PSAT, but if you score very well you can get a scholarship at many colleges.

You have nothing to lose by taking it. The scores are not reported to colleges. And if you get lucky and score high, you could end up being recognized in the National Merit scholarship program.

If you really need to get out of taking it (like if, for example, you need to go out of town that day), you might want to check with your guidance counselor to see whether your high school requires everyone to take it. If not, you could skip it.

Take it. The PSAT is a fairly accurate gauge of your potential performance on the SAT. It can help you identify weak areas so that you can prepare before taking the real thing.

My D wants to take the SAT several times and is actually able to take it for the first time this year BEFORE the PSAT. Good idea or bad idea? Should I ask this in it's own thread?

good practice . and status indicator
