PSAT Merit Scholar Qualifying Score Cutoff for 2009 Grads

Has anyone had a notification on whether they qualified and what the minimum score is for your state?

If so, post here so we can see what each state's cutoff is for this year.

I spoke to our school, and they tell me the results are 'embargoed'. Looking at this web site, it appears that results show up around August 23 every year, and it is .....Aug 23.

Here is the "official" 2008 thread. No reports as of 8-23-2008 AM

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/554901-official-2008-national-merit-semifinalist-cutoff.html

Just to be clear, this is for 2007 test-takers who graduate in 2009.

That thread in the SAT prep section has a post by khoitrinh that states that scores won't be released until 9/12.

The official release date is indeed 9/12.

I would estimate that 90% of the schools respect that.

That allows people attending the other 10% to post their results here, so that all of us can know where we stand.

It's an annual ritual.

Let the action begin!

Yeah. Most schools already have the score cutoffs, but they are not allowed to tell you. I can probably convince my school to tell me though. My school is too hot on following the rules if it doesn't think it matters. I'll try to find out on Monday when I start school.

"Most schools already have the score cutoffs, but they are not allowed to tell you."

Actually, high schools don't have anything yet. The NMSC will be mailing out packages to high scools next week, so depending on mail time most high schools will receive the packages around the Tuesday following Labor Day.

The packages will contain the application materials for those students invited to apply for finalist status, in other words the schools will be receiving application packets to give their semifinalists and nothing for the commended students.

The schools will not be given score cutoffs, but obviously people in a school or in a state can figure out the cutoffs by comparing notes of who did and didn't receive application packets.

The wild card in this is that some schools will release the packets to their semifinalists in early September and others will delay.

Are you sure about that? I know for a fact that some students in a neighboring school district have already gotten their semifinalist status confirmed.

I'm very sure about the process, a little less so about the mailing date.

Background: My son is submitting an application in early September for an athletic early read, and he wanted to know if he could put NMS semifinalist on his app even though it hasn't been announced yet (he's a high scorer in a low score State, so we know he won't be on the bubble.)

So I called NMSC to get the scoop, and they explained the process as I outlined above. They actually told me the date the mailings were going out. I think it was August 26th, but I don't remember with certainty. But I am sure that it wasn't until next week, because they went through a timeline that concluded that most schools should be getting them right around Labor Day.

They also told me that they like people to keep things quiet until the official announcement date in mid-september, but that once a student was given the application packet from the high school that they could go ahead and put that they were a semifinalist on their apps.

Please let us know how you did, and if you made NMS, congrats! BTW, include your state too.

Sherpa,

Why are we not surprised? If they gave you the results, the word would spread in a viral fashion, and their PBX would be jammed for the next week.

They gave you the 'official party line'.

In any event, previous years the scores started showing up about 8/23, and undoubtedly not all schools will embargo their results.

Yes I know the process. I was just asking about the date. Because I know some people who already have the results.

It is unusual to get this far into August without seeing some CC posts about cutoffs.

No question that they were already mailed. Today I saw a school's website offering congratulations to their NMSFs and their Commended Students (in two separate lists).

Sherpa, NMSC says the same thing to anyone who calls, year after year, but for at least six years and probably more, they've been sending the information to school officials the third week of August. They ask the schools not to publicize it, but the actual "embargo" just refers to press release level stuff (e.g., don't release this list to the local paper until 9/12). It's understood that principals and counselors are likely to tell the kids, who generally want to get to work on the essays - or at least, want to get the essays out of the way! As for your son, have you tried calling the principal and/or your son's GC? They're the ones who have very likely received the packets for his school already.

This doesn't say "third week of August" specifically, but here you go: Dates & Deadlines

My apologies for raising expectations or hopes by posting again and bumping this thread up.

I just wanted to note that in response to a query from another CC member, I went back to look at the link for the school I mentioned above, and the congratulatory post is not there now. Perhaps they reconsidered the timing of their post; perhaps somebody submitted a list to the site webmaster without being clear about when they wanted it posted. Or maybe the webmaster posted last year's list. Beats me, but it's not there now.

To that poster: Your PM box is full.

any updates....?

Our school claims they have not received any materials yet, thus the 8/26 mailing date may be correct. This would also explain the total lack of any people posting scores. Last year at this time there were many reports.

There was a release today from the College Board on the SAT averages for each state, otherwise very little action...

My D's school has told the kids that the 12th is the day.

Darn; I'm impatient and so is she. We want to know.

Will the 12th be notification for everyone or just the NMSF's

I was commended but am yet to be notified by my school. I called the NM Agency and they confirmed that I was indeed commended with a 213.

I called NM and was told that semifinalist information was mailed to schools on 8/26. They would NOT release any state cut-offs over the phone. However, if my school did not notify me by 9/10, I could call back and they would release the information to me at that time.

I have a 219 in Pennsylvania and am hoping that the cutoff for my state does not increase by more than 5 points...it was 214 for PA last year!

Very unlikely a state cutoff would rise 5 points.
