PSAT National Achievement: Class of 2011

So, has anyone received notification of commended/semi-finalist status?

I'm a little confused. I have seen on cc that 1 person has, and I'm worried. My score was a 183, but it was in the 90th percentile. Plus, in Texas, I know of students who have made in the late 170s and have still gotten commended...

D was given letter at her school yesterday. 209 IL.

That’s weird, I thought commended was a nationwide score cut-off, and ranged from late 190s to early 200s.

Personally I got it with 205 (CA).

Just a note, commended does almost nothing except notify two colleges of your early interest, which still doesn’t help all that much. All the colleges you apply to will see your SAT score anyway, and that’s what -really- matters.

I don’t think they let you know about your status until september or so. My principal just called me in telling me if I wanted to be part of the program because he has to sign it and stuff. I don’t think it said specifically what status you have - just that you’ve been considered.

Maybe ask your guidance counselor?

Btw, 203 CT

The PSAT Commendation cutoff for class of 2011 is 201.

My principal gave me my letter. Your guidance counselor/principal should have told
you (or you might for some strange reason get it mailed to where you live)?

Btw, 226 CA

@ monster344 & everary
was that commendation for national merit? I’m talking about National Achievement, for African American students.

and my friends who got it last year had it mailed to them, and the counselor and principal called them in around Sept.

Don’t worry buddy, I think I should qualify, but I haven’t gotten it yet

Isn’t the National Achievement Award inherently insulting? Doesn’t it imply that certain people are not capable of measuring up to the Merit standards?

Yes, but who am I to say no to a free award and money?

I hear you.

you’ll make national merit, also.

I honestly didn’t realize what the writing part was about. I played it by ear. -_-
I received my commendation letter 2 weeks ago. I don’t expect to get any farther.

215 here, haven’t gotten my letter yet. Although I have gotten a letter informing me I was in the top 50,000 or something so I don’t know if that counts or not.

Im so mad…forgot to fill out the last page on writing.

missed 3 questions extra. kept me from national merit.

I wouldve made it with my sophomore score, too!

I talked to one semi-finalist, now finalist about it. He got semi w/ 188. Plus, he didn’t get informed about anything until Sept. He said that the only people that are notified of anything their junior year are the commended students.

Also, another person got semi w/ 181. Don’t know what state though.

I’m going to call NASP and ask about it.

Here is a link to the National Achievement page. [National Merit Scholarship Corporation - NASP](http://nationalmerit.org/nasp.php#entryreq)

I don’t see the score cut off, but it does say that you had to specifically note in section 14 that you were a Black American to be considered.

208 CA, I just got the letter from my school. The cutoff hasn’t been made public yet so there’s no way to know for sure until they release that information in the fall of this year whether you made it to semifinalist or not.

My apologies, I read the title wrong. In that case I have no idea and good luck.

Oh well in that case I misread the title as well. I’m not African-American. Sorry, good luck though!
