S received a 209 last year. Does anyone know the cutoffs in NJ for both commendation and NMSF? I think I heard the NMSF for NJ was 221 but how about commendation? His GC said if he hadn't heard anything then he didn't get anything but 209 seems like it would be commendation at least. When are these announced? Why on earth does NM make this so difficult, why don't they just release the scores?

markcc-commended has a national cutoff and all who scored 200 and above are commended. Commended was announced months ago. Call National Merit and they can tell you all you need to know. Don't wait for the GC...seems from lots of posts on this subject that some of the GCs are not very well informed.

Commended will not be officially notified until later this month. The letter that went out in May was to notify students they were receiving some recognition, but it was not specified whether it was commended or semifinalist. The timetable is:

October, 2006- take PSAT
December 2006/January 2007 - receive PSAT scores
May, 2007 - notification of recognition
late August, 2007 - notification of semifinalists
late September, 2007 - notification of commended
February, 2008 - notification of finalist

All who make the national cutoff are commended. National cutoff is known to be 200 this year. The letter may not arrive until later this month but if you are below your state's cutoff and at or above 200 that would equal commended.
