@WImom94 That was an error. Prediction for Wisconsin is 217, give or take. Sorry for the incorrect info.
@sunnyschool I think it’s Algebra II. My daughter took the SAT in August after Algebra II (she is taking pre-cal/trig now) and scored an 800 on the Math SAT just based on her knowledge up to Algebra II. She will, however, need to complete this year’s pre-cal/trig material to be ready for the Math 2 SAT Subject test. Hope this helps.
I too, am trying to figure out from anecdotal evidence, how many from my child’s school are above them. In years past about 5/6 NMSF so wanting to see (as a sample) how many above. This might help us understand potential cut off. We are hoping for a one point decrease…One never knows. And just because the commended went up, that does not mean the state by state goes up.
Do we know for sure that commended cut off went up?
SI of 222 in Texas. Scored one point above last year’s cutoff, so I’m hoping that the NMSF cut off doesn’t go up this year :-SS
Im actually kind of upset because i got 219 which was last years cut off for michigan. I don’t think there was ever a year where it stayed the same or went down
@homerdog - Believe me it’s 100% true data. Not the data from other students. This happened for my daughter case as well (Class of 2017). She had 218 and that time 12 students from the School had 218 and 10 students had 219 or higher which was the cut off in Illinois for Class of 2017 and my daughter missed it by a point that time. Now I was thinking my son will miss it by 1 point as well based on 221 from class of 2018 which I thought will stick this year as well. But I am very sure it ain’t going to be 221 for class of 2019 it could be 222, but I am still leaning towards 223 based on the data I got today. Suddenly this School is not going to have 29 students qualifying as NMSF from 14 and 10 in the previous years. If it were like 20 or so I can believe it could be a possibility but 29 no way!
Excited for S19 who got a 224 composite. D16 was a NMSF but we lived in FL then and there’s a big difference in the requirements. And for those who want to know what it’s worth, D16 got 1/4 of her small liberal arts school paid for b/c of NMSF. We don’t qualify for other aid. So we’re fans.
My school took the PSAT the alternate date (October 25) and I’m in California, but I’m still not able to see my score. Does the test date have anything to do with the score release time?
I think you are in one of Naperville high school. Check their 4 or 5 years history data , the numbers as NMSF are from
10 to 20 some. Based on your data, there 29 above 221, the average numbers of students in each point are 3.625. Since the score distributes, the low score has more numbers. So I think there could be more than 8 students in 221, If the cutoff are 222, the numbers of NMSF students are around 20. It is reasonable number
@vxia12371 try using a VPN to access your scores.
Just checked the score for my S in 10th grade: 1470 (720, 750) and NMSC selection index 219*. He took new SAT back in 8th grade and scored 1500/1600. is there any correlation between SAT and PSAT?
@ILBHHS It’s not going to be 221 cutoff for IL. It could be 222 or 223. That puts IL in top of the pack as per last year cutoff so it most likely will increase for even already higher cutoff states like CA/NJ/DC/WA etc…
S1 got his 10th grade results today via email and send me his ID and pswd, so I can look at his detailed results online.
I am not very familiar with the new PSAT. How do posters recommend that we approach this information to get the most value from it?
@WGSK88 I’m just going to ask one more time. Do you have some sort of inside info? No one else is predicting that jump. Basing your opinion on one school doesn’t make any sense. So what if one school now has 10 more semi finalists than usual? Maybe another school has fewer kids. The SI will be based on all kids in Illinois, not one school.
@SlayMeLove how do I do that? Through an app? If so, what are some good VPN apps ?
i think CA will be 222 or 223 based on information I heard from my child today. Lots of kids 223 and above.
@WGSK88 i feel similar to you in looking at trend from my childs school over the last 2 years. My kid knows of more kids with scores in the 222-228 range than the amount of kids that got NMSF the last 2 years…so I don’t think that CA will stay at 222. Maybe, but I would not be shocked if it went to 223. I know this is very very extrapolated, but it does not appear it would go down 1 point from the scores heard today. That would produce way too many NMSF
“I am not very familiar with the new PSAT. How do posters recommend that we approach this information to get the most value from it?”
The score report has a tab for the NMSQT selection index so be sure to check that out. It won’t matter this year for NM purposes if your student is in 10th - but you’ll have a chance to see how much of an improvement is needed by this time next year.
As for the rest of the score report, it’s a lot of detail that provides the number missed, the scaled score, etc. The big thing to know is that the PSAT is supposed to be what your student would have gotten on the SAT that day (both tests vertically align). So you can look at the subject scores (EBRW score consists of an average of the reading and writing; while Math is also in two sections - one allowing calculator the other not - I believe those raw scores are added together to arrive at the scaled score).
The big difference between PSAT and SAT is that PSAT scaled scores go to 38, SAT to 40. So the PSAT max is 760 for each section and a total of 1520, while the SAT is 800 for each section with a total of 1600. The difference reflects the potential for progression in your student’s college prep curriculum between now and when he takes the SAT. Otherwise they are very closely aligned (SAT is only 15 minutes longer than PSAT).
Finally, if your son plugs his results into Kahn Academy, the program will tailor his prep based off his PSAT - my daughter found that to be a very helpful aspect of the prep two years ago.

@JKMSNJ - yes there is - see post #339 ^^ for more info. However, that first year was really weird and based on preliminary scaling. They’ve firmed things up a bit since then. Your student might need to re-take the SAT for college unless they accept his 8th grade result (which is a great score!). Not sure what state you are in but a 219 in 10th means he might be on his way to NM selection in a year. Encourage him to prep for it - he appears to be quite the natural tester but practice will help with confidence and nailing down study habits.
