PSAT Preparation

Let's get a thread started for those that are going to be studying for the (I assume October) PSAT exam.

What books do you recommend for the PSAT...
Overall?
CR?
Writing?
Math?
Any tips are welcome as well, as this will be my first time taking the test (even though I've taken both the old and new SAT....weird, right?)

Don't really study for it. Soph (or so I assume you are) grades aren't that important. Well when you take it Junior year, now that will be much more important.

Com'on, don't study for the PSAT, especially for the Soph. one, the one that doesn't even matter.

Well, I still want to do well on it...

Is there a reason you're so worried about standardized tests this early in your high school "career"? If you have to worry about college, at least focus on developing passions that will translate into meaningful extracurricular activities. Relax and enjoy sophomore year!

I actually enjoy this stuff--it doesn't worry me.

Take the SAT that corresponds with the PSAT, the one in October. If the SAT comes before the PSAT, you'll be well practiced for the SAT, or vice versa. This way you only have to study once, and you'll be a well-oiled standardized-testing machine.

I think SAT comes first this year. SAT- Oct. 5, PSAT- Oct. 12 or Oct. 15

I've already taken the SAT this year (dumb move) so I don't want to take it again until junior year.

I say study for it and see if you can get the merit cutoff for California, so next year you know, without a doubt, that you could at least be a semifinalist. I thik CA is 216, which is fairly high compared to other states.

So what's the best prep book for the PSAT?

(Besides just the official Collegeboard book)

don't. gahhhh.

some people go down and then miss the merit cutoff. this might actually hurt you, because weird things happen, and jr. yr. matters more than soph. always best to prep a bit before the ones that matter, even with just the practice test they give you in the booklet.

my advice: don't study for this PSAT, see how you do w/o any extra prep, and then prep next year and know what you need to do to guarantee you'll pass the cutoff.

.....actually, that might not be a problem at all. You learn more throughout the school year (went from...100 something - not like 101, but 170-180ish frosh year to 225 jr. year), and so you might not need to prep at all. do something else. have a summer! i think most ntl merit people never study for the PSAT, anyways.
